Communities, Citizenship, and Famous Americans Study Guide

Test is on Wednesday, October 30th

For your test on communities, citizenship, and famous Americans, you will need to be able to answer the following. Think about the things we discussed and made in class. Ideas are listed next to each question.

1. Name the community in which Horizon is located. (Sterling)

2. Name at least two communities of which you are a part. [pic] [pic][pic]

3. Identify what type of community Sterling was 100 years ago (country [pic]) and what type of community it is today (outside the city [pic]).

4. Understand how population affects communities. (When the population (number of people) gets bigger, there is more transportation (cars, busses, taxis, airplanes), more jobs, and more buildings.)

5. Rules and laws help keep everyone safe. Rules are specific to different groups/locations (school, bus, home). Laws are set by our government (following the speed limit, wearing your seatbelt, throwing away liter, not stealing).

6. Identify what you can do to be a good citizen (vote, take care of your community, volunteer)

7. Be able to recite the Pledge of Allegiance- “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

8. Identify the symbols of America-

a. Bald eagle- It is a large bird of prey and the symbol of the USA.

b. American flag- It has 13 stripes and 50 stars. It is red, white, and blue.

c. Pledge of Allegiance- It was written in 1892 and said every morning in school to honor the US flag.

d. Statue of Liberty- It is located in New York. It was a gift from France and a symbol representing freedom.

e. Washington Monument- It was built to honor the first president of the United States

Famous Americans

Jackie Robinson- first African American player in major league baseball. This person helped give opportunities to other African Americans.

Cesar Chavez- Mexican American leader who helped improve conditions for farm workers.

Martin Luther King, Jr.- African American minister who worked so all people would be treated fairly. Gave the “I Have a Dream” speech.”

Benjamin Franklin- started the first library and volunteer fire department.

Helen Keller- overcame disabilities and worked to help others who were blind and deaf.

George Washington Carver- African American scientist and teacher who found hundreds of uses for peanuts, sweet potatoes, and soybeans.

Abraham Lincoln- president who helped end slavery.

Thurgood Marshall- first African American justice on the US Supreme Court.

Christopher Columbus- famous explorer who discovered a route from the Old World to the New World.

Rosa Parks- refused to give up a seat on a bus and fought for equal rights for everyone.
