2828925-76200Dear 4th and 5th Grade Parents,Chat ‘n Chew is Creighton’s Corner’s student book club! This club welcomes any 4th or 5th grader who would like to join and any parent who wishes to volunteer as a meeting leader.Chat ‘n Chew will meet once a month, starting in January. Students will have lunch in the classroom while they discuss the book of the month in a small group setting. Discussions will be facilitated by a volunteer parent. The included books are those that have been nominated for the Elementary Level of the 2013-2014 Virginia Reader’s Choice Award. Upon conclusion of the program, each student will get a chance to vote for the book that he/she thinks should win this prestigious award! Our votes will be tallied with all other participating Virginia schools at the annual Virginia State Reading Association conference in Richmond in the spring. The Virginia Reader’s Choice winner will then be awarded! The nominees are:137160099060Ivan is an easygoing gorilla. Living at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade, he has grown accustomed to humans watching him through the glass walls of his domain. He rarely misses his life in the jungle. In fact, he hardly ever thinks about it at all.Instead, Ivan thinks about TV shows he’s seen and about his friends Stella, an elderly elephant, and Bob, a stray dog. But mostly Ivan thinks about art and how to capture the taste of a mango or the sound of leaves with color and a well-placed line. Then he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from her family, and she makes Ivan see their home—and his own art—through new eyes. When Ruby arrives, change comes with her, and it’s up to Ivan to make it a change for the better.020000Ivan is an easygoing gorilla. It’s all in the Hoove’s Rule Number Forty-Two: Stay cool. And like it or not, Billy and the Hoove have to stick together if Billy ever wants to get in style, get even, and conquer the school.00Billy Broccoli is new to the neighborhood, and wants cool friends and a spot on the baseball team more than anything. Fix things before they get too big for fixing.” Fifth-grader Mattie Breen writes it all down. She has just one week to convince Uncle Potluck to take her on as his custodial apprentice before school starts. As his apprentice, she’ll have important work to do during lunch and recess . . . work that will keep her safely away from other fifth-graders. Whatever you're thinking, it's probably worse. August Pullman was born with a facial deformity that, up until now, has prevented him from going to a mainstream school. Starting 5th grade at Beecher Prep, he wants nothing more than to be treated as an ordinary kid—but his new classmates can’t get past Auggie’s extraordinary face. WONDER begins from Auggie’s point of view, but soon switches to include his classmates, his sister, her boyfriend, and others. These perspectives converge in a portrait of one community’s struggle with empathy, compassion, and acceptance.020000I won't describe what I look like. Whatever you're thinking, it's probably worse. Especially when the clues all point to Frank Pandini Jr., Kallamazoo’s first son and its most powerful, well-respected businessman.020000Platypus Police Squad: The Frog Who Croaked is the first in a series of zany, action-packed middle-grade mysteries featuring platypus police detectives Rick Zengo and Corey O’Malley. When a call comes in about a crime down at the docks involving a missing schoolteacher and a duffle bag full of illegal fish, Zengo and O’Malley are going to have to learn to set their differences aside if they want to get to the bottom of this. Especially when the clues all point to Frank Pandini Jr., Kallamazoo’s first son and its most powerful, well-respected businessman. This program has become very popular at our school, as many children enjoy breaking down a story, looking at it from different perspectives, and relating it to real life issues. Plus, the children get to eat lunch with a small group of friends who share a common interest! I hope you, as a parent, will encourage your child to take this opportunity to read some amazing books and share his/her thoughts regarding the book with their peers. All students wishing to participate should fill out the attached registration form and return to school no later than Friday, December 13. HELP! We need the participation of parents in order to make this program possible. It is only a 30 minute per month obligation. I will provide discussion materials and activity ideas each month that may be helpful to you. You can either lead a group on your own or “job-share” with another parent. Once all applications have been received and we have secured parent volunteers, I will send home a letter with your child that lists their group, group leader with contact information, and the dates of each meeting. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.Sincerely,Kate HoppenrathCCE LibrarianKate.Hoppenrath@703-957-4480302895025400Registration FormPlease complete and return by Friday, December 13, 2013________1.
