Principal’s Perspective

How can time fly so quickly? It seems that it was merely a blink of an eye since our seniors walked through that front door on the first day of school and became the "official" leaders of the school. I can still remember seeing the excitement on their faces and hearing the excitement in their voices as they found their niche at the top of the totem pole. Even then some were counting down the days until graduation!

If you walk down our halls, you can still hear that count down; but the tone of that backward count has changed somewhat. Now, instead of the attitude that the end will never come, our seniors are beginning to see the end (with excitement, I might add); but they are also beginning to experience the second thoughts that come when the time approaches to leave something familiar. They are beginning to realize that in less than a month they will no longer be Louisburg High School Wildcats but will be graduates of LHS. They are coming to the realization that this rite of passage will change the relationships they now have. For some, they may not see many of their classmates for years. For others, even though they will continue to see some of the familiar faces, they are recognizing that things will be different when they do meet former classmates. Each will follow their dreams and pursue careers. Some will move far away; others will stay close to home. But wherever they may go, they will still have one thing in common--they will be graduates of Louisburg High School.

One of the most exciting parts of being an educator is to be able to watch young people grow and mature as they move closer to adulthood. This class--the class of 2009--has not let us down. We have watched those immature freshmen who walked into the building four years ago gain confidence and show others in our school how to become leaders of tomorrow. We know that the next time we see them our relationship will not be the same. Just as they with their classmates, we will be on a different plane than previously. But no matter where the future takes them, our seniors need to realize that we are proud of them, and we look forward to the time when we can hear about how they have reached their dreams. They may graduate in a couple of weeks and become the adults and parents of tomorrow; but they will always be "our kids"--"our kids" because we're proud to call them ours.

April Students

of the Month Selected

Gentry Griffin, junior, and Andrew Barker, senior, were selected as the recipient for the April Students of the Month Award. Each student has been a welcome addition to the LHS student body.

Gentry has been involved in a wide variety of activities during her high school career. She participates in athletics all three seasons of the year, having played volleyball for three years, basketball for three years, softball for one year, and track for two years. She rounds out her activities this year by being a member of the Select Choir and National Honor Society. Teens Against Tobacco has filled her time, as well, for three years.

Gentry also excels in the area of academics. She has been on the Superintendent's Honor Roll all three years she has been an LHS Wildcat.

Andrew's interests cover a wide gamut, ranging from being a member of the varsity golf team for four years to being on the yearbook staff for the last two years. During his first three years of high school he was a member of the Wildcat Marching Band. As a junior Andrew was a member of Student Council, serving as a junior representative; and he has held the office of President during his senior year. As a part of his senior student council activities he has been instrumental in the production of Stuco News.

In 2008, Andrew was the LHS winner of the Voice of Democracy speech contest and qualified for state-level yearbook ad writing competition in 2009. Besides his involvement in school activities, he is also very active in his church and its youth group.

Congratulations to these representatives of the LHS student body. They are very deserving of this award.

Academic Awards Banquet to Honor Excellence

The academic awards banquet will be Wednesday, May 6th, 2009, in the high school commons. Departments select 5% of their students to receive these awards, and students were notified the last week of April about their reception of this honor.

Doors for commencement will open at 12:45 on May 17, 2009.

Please remember that no one will be admitted before that time. Out of respect for all attendees, seating will be on a first come – first served basis. You are requested to not save seats for those who will arrive later.

Senior Commencement Speaker

The senior speakers for this year's commencement were chosen by a selection committee of senior and staff representatives the second week of April. Chelsea Morland and Emilie Patterson will represent their class at commencement on May 17th.

“Skip Day” Is Coming

As first semester, as a part of the LHS early out program, students will be able to earn a legitimate "skip day", based on grades and attendance. Students must have a 3.0 semester GPA and no more than 24 class absences or tardies in order to earn this day. This year's skip day will be on Monday, May 11th.

Planning for Student Fall Wardrobes

Though this school year isn't over we want to begin making parents aware of certain clothing items that will not be allowed next year. This will hopefully help cut down on the amount of clothing that might be purchased over the summer and then cannot be worn to school. Females at LHS will NOT be allowed to wear tops or dresses with spaghetti straps or halter-tops. The same is true of short midriff tops. If students are found in violation of this policy, they will either be requested to go home to change or to put on another piece of clothing for the remainder of the day.

We ask that all parents help us enforce this district dress code.

Finals Are Coming...Finals Are Coming

We realize that many families are beginning to make summer vacation plans. We ask that as you do this to please take into consideration the fact that high school finals will be on May 20, 21, and 22. It is hard on the students and the teachers when exceptions are asked to be made.

We have worked hard to provide a testing environment for our students that is conducive to studying and taking the finals seriously. Please join us in our efforts by delaying vacation plans until after the last day of school.

Note from the Cafeteria

It is that time of the year that we need to think of finalizing things that need to be done before the school year ends. It has been a great and most successful year with lots of good things happening. Everyone gets excited and some things may get over-looked. This is a reminder to all students and parents that all lunch accounts are to be paid in full by Friday, May 8th, 2009. No charges will be allowed after this date. Whatever money is left on an account stays in the students’ account for the following school year. Any senior that has money owed to them can transfer it to a siblings account if desired. Everyone must check with Trish in the lunch room for final checkout and to determine if any money is owed. No one will be released without a signature and accounts paid in full. You can check with Trish at any time, just not during lunch line time. Good luck to all Seniors and we are looking forward to another great year. Have a great summer!

Reward Day for Kansas Assessment Incentive Program

Sophomores who took the Kansas Math Assessment and juniors who took the Kansas Reading Assessment had the opportunity to earn either a half day or full day out of school. Eligibility is determined by comparing their 2009 scores with their most recent middle school scores for the same assessments.

May 4, 2009, has been designated as the day when students who met the testing incentive criteria will be released from school. Parents have received letters from the school notifying them of their child's eligibility and what reward they will receive.

If either parents or students have questions about this, they should contact the office.

Keep on Track for Graduation by Attending Summer School 2009

Summer school enrollment is now in full swing. Parents of students who failed either Math, English, or Social Studies first semester or are in jeopardy of failing either of these classes second semester received a letter in April.

If you have not completed and returned an enrollment form for your student, it is necessary to do so as soon as possible. You or your child may pick up one in the high school office, or you may call the high school to receive one in the mail. Enrollment forms should be returned by May 20. Students may not double enroll in English so it is imperative that they make up any lost credit if they plan to graduate with their class.

Summer school information and the enrollment form can also be found on the LHS website. (, Louisburg High School tab, then click on the Academics tab, then Summer Credit Recovery)

Unlawful Hosting Minors consuming alcoholic Liquor or Cereal malt Beverage Statute

Enclosed is a letter regarding the Kansas Unlawful Hosting Statue that was sent to Dr. Doll by David Miller, Miami County District Attorney. He has asked that this be disseminated to parents so they are aware of the criminal liability for providing alcohol or cereal malt beverages to minors or allowing these substances to be consumed or possessed on their property.

Highly Qualified Teachers

Under the No Child Left Behind Act, students have a right to be taught by “highly qualified” teachers. Because our schools receive federal funds, we must inform you whenever your child has a teacher not considered “highly qualified” to teach a particular subject at your child’s grade level.

In order to be considered “highly qualified” under the federal law, teachers hired before the 2002-2003 school year must have obtained full state certification, hold at least a bachelor’s degree and either demonstrate competence in all academic subjects in which the teacher teaches based on a high, objective, uniform state standard of evaluation or meet the same requirements as newly-hired teachers. Newly-hired (hired after the beginning of the 2002-2003 school year) elementary teachers must have full state certification, hold a bachelor’s degree, and pass a state test for teachers in reading, writing and other areas of the elementary curriculum. Newly-hired middle and high school teachers must meet the same certification and degree requirements and pass a state test in the subject area in which they teach or have an academic major, graduate degree or comparable course work in the subject.

In the event that a student is instructed by a non HQT teacher for more than four continuous weeks, a letter would be sent home to parents explaining how the teacher did not meet this definition. At that time, parents would be encouraged to contact the superintendent at PO Box 550, 29020 Mission Belleview, Louisburg, Kansas 66053 or 913.837.1700 with any questions.

Graduation Attire

During graduation ceremonies, all participants will be expected to wear clothing appropriate for this formal occasion. This means, specifically, that no T-shirts, shorts, flip-flops, or tank tops will be allowed. Also, we would like to highly recommend that all boys wear a collared shirt and tie since the girls will already have collars in their robe packets. Students who fail to dress appropriately will not be allowed to participate in the commencement exercises since the ceremony is not mandatory.

Official Commencement Photographer

This year the high school has contracted with Kevin White from On Location Photography in Paola to individually photograph all seniors as they walk across the stage and receive their diplomas. This will provide parents the opportunity to have an action photograph while still being able to sit in the audience and enjoy the entire ceremony.

Order packets will be included in the mailing from the school. Also included in that envelope will be information about the schedule for the seniors' last week and the senior parent breakfast. If you chose to order these pictures, complete the order form per directions and either mail it directly to On Location Photography or return it to the high school. If the packets are returned before commencement on May 17, parents will receive pictures within two weeks of graduation.
