 “Kick Start” Needs for 5th-Graders”These are the identified skills necessary for students to kick start the year in the right direction. Please spend time over the summer reinforcing these important skills so your child can start the new year off successfully.Incoming Fifth-Grade Students:English/ Language ArtsWriting: Know punctuation and capitalization rulesKnow proper sentence structureBe able to construct a paragraph of 5 sentences Have your students do journaling throughout the summer. This is a great creative writing exercise. They can also write to music, outside, create poetry and write letters. This is a vital skill that they will be using their whole life.Handwriting: Ability to write in legible cursive Grammar: Basic knowledge of nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs, prepositions, and subject complements Reading: Knowledge of basic comprehension skills and strategies Knowledge of basic story elements Ability to independently read and comprehend books at their reading level Reading is the most important skill your student will ever learn. Set aside quiet reading time. This is a great habit to start for summertime. Have your child read 30 minutes every day. Books, magazines, and newspapers are appropriate reading materials. If you do nothing else “academic” during the summer, this is a must!Read with your child and have them read out loud. Even though he/she may be an independent reader, reading with your child is very important to model fluency, make predictions, share the experience of reading, and give your child exposure to challenging vocabulary. Vocabulary/Spelling: Able to use a dictionary and have a solid foundation in phonicsMathKnow math facts and whole number operations for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division Know multiplication facts (memorized) PRACTICE 15 MINUTES DAILY/FLASHCARDSUnderstand the difference in place value and value Exposure to division with a remainder (For example 17 ÷ 4) Estimation - rounding to different place values up to hundred thousands Measurement to the inch, ? inch, and ? inchReview math facts!!!!! Use flashcards, websites, cooking with recipes, or music to help memorize. Even when you’re driving, ask your child random math facts. Review whole number operations for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.Cook together, using some simple recipes. Let your child practice measuring, doubling a recipe, and skills with telling time. If you google science experiments for kids, you can gather a list of ideas that will make this a summer to remember. Take pictures of the experiments and have your child write a hypothesis and record the steps, an explanation of what happened, or a description of the experiment. This would be a great summer keepsake!Plan a virtual trip to a science museum.Social StudiesHave a knowledge of basic geographic terms and maps as well as be able to understand the effects of historical events studied Play the license plate game. On a map, keep track of the states you see on license plates while you’re driving around.Vacations are perfect for this game!
