????????????????????????????????????August 2017Dear Parents, I wanted to let you know about our Reading/Accelerated Reader program this year. Each student has taken an assessment and has been given a Lexile range as a result of this assessment. As you know, reading practice improves vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. In order for each student to make the most of this practice, they will be asked to read books that fall into their Lexile range. This range shows me where they are reading comfortably and able to understand the most. Please note that a Lexile of 850 or higher is considered 5th grade, and what our Milestones testing uses to determine a passing score. Using this range, I have given the students a reading goal. Again this year we will use Accelerated Reader to help motivate and monitor our students’ reading. I am requiring the students to focus more on reading within their Lexile range and not just reading for points. Again this year they will work towards their goal, and if met each nine weeks will be given a reward from our media center. However, any student that reads books within their Lexile range and continues to test and go above their AR goals, will be allowed to choose from our reward chart in the classroom. As usual, we are looking for 85% correct on each test or higher. If they are reading in their Lexile range this should not be an issue. I want to instill a love for reading and make this a daily activity. Reading logs will be sent home for students to record what they read and you to sign off on every night. Reading for 20 minutes each night will be part of our nightly homework. A good source for finding Lexile levels on any book is or . Just go to this site and type the title of the book you want to read. It will give you a Lexile and if it falls within the range you are set to read. However, if it doesn’t, the students do not need to read this particular book. You will be surprised at the levels of some of the books they have been reading. I expect, and hope, that Lexile levels will improve this year. You will notice that the higher the Lexile the content of the book changes. I will help your child at school choose appropriate books for their age, but this is something you will need to monitor at home when choosing books. As always, please let me know if you have any questions. I will be glad to assist you as we learn this “new way of reading” together. Mrs. Morgan cmorgan@effingham.k12.ga.us ................
