Appropriate Grade Level: Struggling readers-lower and upper elementary

Strategy: Word Baggies

Procedures/Steps:

Prepare: Put the letter tiles of preselected words into the word baggies. Write

each students name on their his/her baggie.

1) Give Each Student his/her own word baggie

2) Student removes the letter tiles from the bag and places them face up on the desk.

3) 3) The teacher says, "Move these letter tiles around on your desk and see how many two letter words you can make. Then see how many three letter words you can make," etc. Teacher awards a point for every word the student spells correctly. Students write the words they have created on the Word Baggie Collection Form(attached). Then have the students tally the points and record them on the Word Baggie Data Form (attached).

4) 4) Finally, ask the student to use all of the letters and make one long word. Tell them it is worh 10 points.

5) Count the number of smaller words and record the number on each students data tracking sheet. Return the words to the bag and use them again three more times during the week.

Comments/Tips

-It is important to make sure that the students are moving the letter tiles around and are not just guessing.

-Always count the smaller words that students create even if they create the secret word first.

-Students will become more proficient as they use the word baggies three more times

throughout the week.
