Introduction:
You will be learning about many civilizations this year in 6th grade and have already learned about 1: Mesopotamia. But what makes a civilization a civilization? How is it different from a city or a town? A civilization must have certain attributes.
Attributes of a Civilization:
Take Cornell notes on the seven attributes of a civilization.
Project:
Using your knowledge of attributes, create your own civilization! You will be illustrating your civilization and explaining how it works through expository writing.
Directions:
1. Think of a name for your civilization. When you create your poster, write the name in large letters at the top.
1. Fill out the attached pages for five of the attributes.
2. Choose any 4. Write an expository paragraph for each of the 4 attributes you chose.
a. Each attribute should be explained and illustrated on your poster. Explain how each attribute works in your civilization and use academic language in your writing. Use proper paragraph structure. Writing conventions count. Typing is preferred.
3. Illustrate your civilization using white paper and gluing it on to the construction paper. It should be neat, detailed, colorful, and organized. Use colored pencils, crayons, and/or markers. You may use clip art, or magazine pictures.
4. Label parts of your civilization that would be helpful to recognize the attributes, such as a ziggurat, an irrigation system, a temple of worship, or a market place.
5. You will be graded on the quality of your writing, neatness, following directions, how well you show your social studies expertise in your project.
6. To earn extra credit, complete 5 attributes completely and correctly.

Stable Food Supply
In the civilization of Pearon, the stable food supply is pears. Slaves go out every day and pick all sorts of fresh, juicy pears. These trees are watered with the local irrigation system. After picking the pears, the surplus pears are stored in the local temple for the winter. Some pears may also be traded to neighboring towns for tools or wool. The rest are used to make pear cider, jam, and pies which, the citizens of Pearon love to eat for every meal.
