6th Grade English SyllabusAmy Carso – Team 6ACourse description: The 6th grade English curriculum is built around the Missouri State Standards.Rationale: Communication skills are central to both cognitive and social development. People read, write, talk, listen, view and represent ideas visually to find and interpret information; to combine knowledge and experience; to reflect and relax; to explore possibilities and generate new ideas; to solve problems; to make decisions; and to communicate their experiences to others. CPS students are able to successfully apply literacy skills in all academic, professional and personal areas of their lives as a result of the K-12 Language Arts curriculum.Course description: As students transition from 5th grade to middle school, they also experience a significant increase in the rigor of their Language Arts standards, being introduced to a variety of new skills that they will work to perfect over grades 6-8. In reading, students need to begin to analyze the texts they read, forming arguments that are distinct from personal opinions and supported by relevant textual evidence (which students are learning to formally cite for the first time). Focus should be on understanding a writer’s plot/sequencing, tone, and authorial point of view, through the study of particular details that make up the author’s collective approach. Vocabulary study should expand to include figurative meanings of words. In writing, students should begin to develop a consistent, formal style, with particular attention to clarity of organization and sentence variety. When speaking, students additionally must learn to maintain appropriate eye contact, volume, and pronunciation.Consensus Map:August – October: Fiction reading/Narrative writingOctober – February: Nonfiction reading/Informative writingFebruary – April : Drama-film-poetry reading/Argumentative writingApril - May: Multi-genre review unit/State testing & remediation/enrichmentIndependent reading: Every day students will read an independent reading book for a portion of the class time. As the school year progresses, the number of books students will be required to read will increase. Also, students will be assigned a specific genre every other month. To hold students accountable for their independent reading, they will be assigned a written response that will be due at the end of each month.5032375134620006th Grade Book Club: Students throughout Gentry are constantly looking for quality books to read. One way they learn about new books is through recommendations from peers. The 6th Grade Book Club will allow students to read and present books in an artistic way to the benefit of their peers. After reading books, club members will use a variety of multimedia presentations such as book trailers or bulletin boards to share their love of books with their peers. This club should appeal to both students who like to read and write and enjoy being creative with technology.Parent/Student Book Club: This 6th grade book club will meet in the evenings three times during the course of the school year. Parents and students will be given a list of three books that will be read prior to the first meeting.Contact Information:Amy Carso6th grade EnglishGentry Middle SchoolPhone: (573)214-3240Email: acarso@ ................
