6th Grade English Language Arts
Daily Routine: When students enter their ELA class, they are expected to immediately begin working on their “bell ringer”. A bell ringer activity is a relatively short activity that is to be completed at the very beginning of class, automatically, as part of a daily/weekly routine. In our class, bell ringers will consist of silent reading, writing prompts, and grammar edits. The remainder of the 90 minute ELA class is spent working on reading strategies, practicing grammar concepts, and working on writing pieces.
Homework: Homework is not assigned on a nightly basis. ELA homework will mostly consist of independent reading, reading logs, and longer-term projects. The students are expected to read the book that they have chosen for their quarter book report. (see Book Reports section) A reading log will be due each Friday for 4 consecutive weeks based upon their book, and a book “report”/project will be due soon after the final reading log.
Curriculum:
Grammar –assessments may occur a couple of times each marking period
Writing – 1 or 2 “long-term” writing pieces each marking period, along with many shorter pieces
Reading Anthology – quizzes/tests will occur approximately every 1 ½ to 2 weeks.
Novels – Two to be covered during the year (in class)
Fall Novel –
Milkweed (general classes) &The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (honors classes)
Spring Novel –
The Giver (all classes)
Independent Reading: The students will be asked to read a book from a specific genre each marking period. A reading log will be completed at home and turned in each week while reading the book. A book report or project will be completed before the end of the marking period.
Genres:
Quarter 1 – Realistic Fiction
Quarter 2 – Historical Fiction
Quarter 3 – Nonfiction
Quarter 4 – Science Fiction/Fantasy
Grading: Assessments could take on many forms including: tests, quizzes, essay and discussion questions, group work, and oral projects.
Quarter Averages are calculated using the following percentages:
• Homework Completion/ Reading Logs= 10%
• Quizzes = 25%
• Classwork = 25%
• Tests/Projects = 40%
IMPORTANT
Late Work Policy: Homework Assignments (reading logs, projects, etc.) will receive a 5 point deduction for each school day that it is late. Assignments that are 6 days late or later will not be accepted and a grade of zero will be earned.
