School Advisory Council/Safety Committee Meeting

Meeting Minutes

1. Welcome / Ground Rules / Intro

Anna Ventura called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone.

2. Ivy Hawn Vision, Mission Statement, Ivy Hawn Way

• A leadership and collaborative culture, committed to continuous improvement in teaching and learning, will raise student achievement in both academics and arts and prepare all students with 21st century education. – Adopted, 2016; Aligned to Volusia County Schools

• To foster intelligence, individuality and artistry for a lifetime. – Adopted, 2011

• I will do my best every day. I will treat others with kindness and respect. I will take responsibility for my words, choices, and actions. – Adopted 2011; Revised 2016

• Ivy Hawn has begun reminding students of the Ivy Hawn Way

3. Review and Approval of Minutes:

• Mr. Wagner motioned to approve minutes; Mr. Schuring seconded; all approved

4. Appoint New Members to 18-19 (if applicable)

5. Elementary Updates

Ms. Harrell reported the following elementary school updates to the committee:

Kindergarten:

• Spring Showcases starting May 13

• Mother’s Day Tea: May 10th

• Zoo field tip: May 17th

• End of Year Breakfast: May 24th

• We have been learning about measurement, community helpers, plants and animals

First Grade:

• Lifecycle of the Butterfly – watching caterpillars grow into butterflies

• Career Day: May 1 (Parent presenters, and students will dress as their desired future career)

• Crayola Experience: May 3

• Measuring with a Ruler

• End of Year Goals: DRA 18 with 60 WPM; 95% of Sight Words

Second Grade

• April: Spring Egg Hunt & Central Florida Zoo

• May: Spring Performances, Showing 1st graders around 2nd grade classrooms

• Field Day/End of Year Celebrations

• Science: Life Cycles (both Animals & Plant) hopefully will be able to watch caterpillars change into butterflies and we are watching a garden bean plant grow

• Writing Using Mentor Text: Opinion Writing - Using the True Story of the Three Little Pigs & The Great Kapok Tree (next 2 weeks)

Third Grade:

• Math Review Days

• Field Trip: Sea Life Orlando (May 28)

• ABC Countdown to Summer

Fourth Grade:

• FSA Reading: May 1-2

• FSA Math: May 6-7

• Native American Presentation by Jimmy Sawgrass: May 22

• End of Year Field Day

• Greek Mythology Unit

• End-of-Year Celebrations

Fifth Grade:

• Ready for Testing!

• FSA Reading this week

• Field Trip: Universal

• 5th Grade Promotion Ceremony

• Field Day

6. Middle School Updates

Rachel Simpson reported the following middle school updates to the committee:

6th GRADE:

We are working on the following units:

Brackin 7th grade:

• We are in full FSA review mode now.  Students are taking practice FSA tests from the testing website.  We are reviewing with test Item specs from the FSA website and with a Track Tournament Event review.  

Gregorski 7th grade:

• Civics is in full EOC preparation.  The exam will be on May 16th.  We are also in the process of choosing next year’s Washington DC attendees.

Baker 7th ELA/Reading:

• Reading FSA May 1st & 2nd. After the FSA, Ms. Baker’s class will learn how to write dialogue and cover a Science Fiction unit.

Forney 7th ELA/Reading:

• Reading FSA May 1st & 2nd. After the FSA, Dr. Forney’s class will be finishing Teddy Bodain.

Senf 7th:

• We are working in the Ecology Unit and completing an endangered animal project. Moving into carrying capacity of a habitat.

8th Grade:

ELA: “The Thrill of Horror” and FSA review.

Science: Reviewing for the FSSA (May 3rd).  After the test we will proceed with STEM challenges and prep for high school.

US History: N/A

8th grade math: Review for FSA (May 13, 14 &15) along with Systems of Linear Equations.

Algebra: - Review for EOC (May 20 & 21) along with Exponential Functions and Statistics.

Intensive Math: N/A

Wilson: Orchestra Show is May 9th @ 5:30pm and Choir Show is May 9th @ 7:30pm.

Morris:

• Computer lab certifications in 6th grade are moving along; we have our second IC3 Digital Literacy certified student (above a beyond…expectation is 1 certification...the digital literacy means they got 3 certificates this year). We are also working on personal growth and development through the power of positivity and creating habits that make us happier and more productive.

Stewart:

• We have Singing in the Rain Jr. (the final Musical Theater Class production) on Thursday, May 2 at 6:30 pm for $5 - It isn’t like the Athens, but we are proud of the kids!

• Jr. Thespian Awards Banquet and Induction Meeting on Saturday May 25 at 6 pm. Family ticket for $20 (4 people), the parents handle this one except for the induction.

Kushner:

• Senior Dance Team auditions will be May 22nd and 23rd for rising 6th – 8th graders.

• The Middle School Dance Tech classes will perform their showcase, “Celebration of Dance” on May 24th at 6:30pm. Students in dance tech I, II, and III will perform class choreography as well as student choreography. This is a free show.

7. The Arts Updates

Ms. Horan reported the following Arts updates to the committee:

• May 3rd Jr Dance Team end of year show   6:30pm $10

• May 7th and 8th Jr Dance Team Auditions 4-6pm need to be at both days.

• May 13th, 14th, 16th Elem Spring Showcase – Bada Bing, It’s Spring. Check Calendar for show days and times

• May18th T3 Kids Fringe Orlando

• May 19th T3 Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Workshop

• May 28th T3 Auditions 3:30-6:00

• May 29th T3 Call Backs 2:30-5:00

8. Parent Academy and Community Events Updates

• Annual Golfing for the Arts is scheduled for May 4th in New Smyrna

• Award Ceremonies

• 7th-8th Grade Dance May 11th 7-10 pm

• May 15th is the official opening of the Art Gallery at 5pm

• Gradventure May 17th

SAFETY AND SECURITY

9. Facilities: Safety and Security Measures Done Thus Far: Mrs. Conway / Mrs. Ventura

• Added locked gates to the front of the breezeway. They are open in the morning from 7:30-8:00 am, closed during the day and then opened back up at 3pm.

• We are still working on fencing other areas off.

• Front office will be moved to the front building which will be in full effect in the fall of 2019/2020 school year.

• Crosswalks- Continuing to work with the City of Lake Helen and the District.

• Temporary fencing will be used to help ensure safety throughout the parking lot.

• Parent Information on Parking/Walking Safety to be provided during “Meet the Teacher”

• Due to massive student/parents crossing Ohio Street in front of the main gates the gates will remain closed in the afternoon to encourage crossing at the crosswalk.
