Reading Instruction:

Reading instruction will take place daily with an emphasis on development of reading skills. This will occur through direct instruction and daily independent reading in class. Students will choose their own books but also be required to read a variety of books in different genres. Students will keep a Reader’s Notebook where they keep track of their reading. Students will be reading, reflecting on, and writing about their books frequently. Higher order thinking and rigor will be used.

Writing Instruction:

Reading and writing go hand-in-hand. Many of our best writers are great readers and vice versa. Writing instruction will occur frequently, and students will produce one formal piece per quarter. Students will often have choices of topics. Students will also be responding in writing to their reading on an almost daily basis.

Grammar, spelling, and mechanics are taught as functions of editing. There are no spelling lists, but correct spelling is expected.

Homework:

The bulk of student homework will be independent reading at home along with online reading practice using OnTrac. More information will follow.

During the first half of the quarter, late homework will be accepted for half credit if turned in by the interim mark. During the second half of each quarter, late homework will be accepted for half credit if turned in by the last day of the marking period.
