For the month of April 2016

-----------------------

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

• SNACK ITEMS, WE HAVE THE SAME PEOPLE SENDING IN TREATS FOR THE CLASS OVER AND OVER. IT WOULD BE GREAT IF SOME OTHER FRIENDS WOULD BRING SOMETHING TO SHARE!

CHECK WITH YOUR CHILD TO SEE IF HE OR SHE NEEDS:

• PENCILS

• ERASERS

I cannot believe that it is already April; I guess time flies when you’re having fun. It seems as though the school year was just starting and now it is more than ¾ of the way done. As you all know the testing season is upon us. We will be completing our NYS ELA test the week of April 4th and our Math test will take place the following week. As your child may have shared with you we are currently doing Math 3 times a day to get all materials covered.

We are very lucky to have a student teacher joining us from SUNY Cortland. Her name is Grace Wahlberg and she will be with us until May 11th. We are fortunate to have her joining us and bring some new and refreshing ideas for all of us.

For the next month we will be working on the following materials:

Math

• We are reviewing for the NYS Math exam using a variety of skills and concepts. We will continue to review after testing.

• The later part of the month will involve stepping up into some fourth grade skills and concepts.

Reading

• We are currently working on reading The Chocolate Touch and working on comprehension questions and discussions about the book.

• As the month progresses we will work our way into a variety of books about the Titanic and will also tie in Social Studies and Science with a unit of study.

Science/Social Studies

• Titanic unit

• Scholastic News

ELA

• We will be starting a research paper of some type. The final product will be 3 or more paragraphs long. The students will be required to use 3 or more resources and will have given criteria that they will be graded on.

Please check with your child to see how his or her school supplies are. Many children are without pencils and erasers these days!

Important April dates:

4th – Student Assembly 8:30

5th, 6th, 7th – NYS ELA test

13th, 14th, 15th – NYS Math test

18th – Staff only (no school for students)

22nd – Rest, Relax & Read Day

Reader’s Club

By the end of this month I am hoping that each child will have 35 or more Reader’s Club books. This should not be difficult considering that they should all have 30 or more at this point.

If you have any questions or concerns at this point or would like to set up a conference please contact me. You can send questions and concerns by email to kbownin@. Thank you as always for your support in your child’s education. Check the attached calendar for important dates in april.

Sincerely - Kelly Browning
