In 6th grade students begin using the curriculum they will continue with on through high school. It focuses on getting the students to really think about how math works and make connections to using it in daily life. In science, students will have a textbook, but we will not use it much. Instead for homework students will use an online curriculum called Acellus. They will be assigned short videos and follow up questions online. Students are expected to keep Cornell notes in their journals while watching the videos. Class time will be spent on activities, labs, and investigations to further enhance knowledge of what students have been learning. Students will also have articles to read and annotate as well. Assignments:a. HomeworkStudents will receive homework each school day that is expected to be completed by the following school day. Their homework assignments will vary from note-taking and critical thinking questions to project-based activities. Critical thinking will be a large focus of instruction this year. Homework is an important aspect of this course as they will only be in class 2 days a week. The remaining 3 school days should be “home school” instruction by a parent. Students will be given a planner to write their homework assignments in each school day. Please check and sign your student’s planner each school day.ReadingStudents will have assigned reading from their textbooks and/or other various sources. Additionally students will have free choice reading. c. In Class AssignmentsStudents will also be expected to complete some assignments in class. We will do cooperative based learning assignments, labs and hands on activities often during our time together. Students will be expected to actively participate in class and will sometimes receive a participation grade for various activities. BinderStudent will need a binder and tab dividers. In this binder students will keep and organize both their math notes and homework assignments. In addition students will be provided a Science notebook in order to take notes. The binder and notebook will be checked and graded regularly. Required Materials:Textbooks: CPM Core Connections and Holt Earth Science. A journal provided by APL, planner provided by APL.Other materials needed: binder paper, index tab dividers, pencils, binder.Evaluation:Students will be assessed on in-class activities, homework, quizzes/tests projects, group participation and participation in class. All work needs to be completed on time to receive full credit. The following marks and corresponding percents will be used:A100-90B89-80C79-70D69-60F59 and belowLate Work:Work turned in late and not associated with an absence will not earn full credit. Late work will be accepted one class day after it is due, then it will no longer be accepted and the resulting grade will be a zero. When a student is absent, missing work can be found on . Classroom Expectations:Students will need to come to class prepared to learn each school day. They need to bring their required materials provided by APL, paper and pencils. Attendance in our site classes are a privilege. If a student cannot maintain the appropriate classroom comportment that allows all students the environment to learn, they will be withdrawn from the site class and will need to complete their course of study at home. ***Communication is very important.
