Basic Map Components Activity

DIRECTIONS: Place a check mark in the blank as you do each of the following on your map.

1. _____ Write the map’s title “Ludington State Park” in the

northwest corner of the map.

2. _____ How many restrooms does the park have? Write the

answer next to restrooms in the legend.

3. _____ Draw a compass rose near the east edge of the map.

4. _____ Circle the building just north of the Skyline Trail

Boardwalk.

5. _____ Highlight the trail northwest of Jackpine Loop.

6. _____ Circle the parking lots.

7. _____ Trace 2 routes, IN DIFFERENT COLORS, to the Big

Sable Point Lighthouse from the Visitor Center.

8. _____ What direction is the Hamlin Dam from the Cross

Country Trails? Write the direction near the dam.

9. _____ What direction is the Park Store from the Beechwood

Campground? Write the direction near the

campground.

HOME TO SCHOOL MAP

DIRECTIONS: Use this checklist to help you design a map from your house to the school. Your map should be accurate enough for someone to actually use.

_____ Home and school are clearly marked and labeled

_____ Highlight the best way to get from home to school

_____ Include a compass rose with the cardinal and intermediate

directions

_____ Map key is included and explains the symbols used

_____ All roads used for traveling from home to school are labeled

_____ Include and label at least two major crossroads

_____ Include at least two natural landmarks (lakes, woods, etc.)

_____ Include at least two man-made landmarks (buildings, parks,

etc.)

_____ Writing and drawing are neat

_____ Color is added

Using Lines of Latitude & Longitude Activity

DIRECTIONS: Carefully use your atlas and the coordinates provided to find the countries or states listed in the table. Complete the boxes for the name of the country or state and its first letter. Use the first letters, in order, to find the secret message!

|LATITUDE |LONGITUDE |NAME OF COUNTRY/STATE |FIRST LETTER |

|35°N |105°E | | |

|43°N |120°W | | |

|22°S |17°E | | |

|39°N |22°E | | |

|60°N |100°E | | |

|34°S |64°W | | |

|39°N |35°E | | |

|33°S |56°W | | |

|22°N |17°E | | |

|30°S |138°E | | |

|15°N |100°E | | |

|32°N |53°E | | |

|35°N |97°W | | |

|12°N |86°W | | |

|10°N |30°E | | |

Once you have found all the countries or states, write the letters IN ORDER (from top to bottom) in the space below. Your secret message will be revealed!

Big Ideas of Lesson 4, Unit 1

1. Maps are valuable tools that help geographers study the planet.

2. Maps have basic components which help us to understand the information

presented.

3. Basic map components include the title, symbols, legend, compass rose,

scale bar, and lines of latitude and longitude.

4. Lines of latitude and longitude provide a geographic grid to determine exact

location on Earth.

5. The globe can be divided into northern and southern hemispheres, separated

by the equator, or into eastern and western hemispheres, separated by the

Prime Meridian and 180 degree longitude.

6. Geographers rely on thematic maps to focus on specific themes or types of

information.

.

4. Mapmakers show Earth’s round surface on flat maps called projections.

5. Technology helps geographers understand Earth better.

6. Aerial photographs and satellite images provide current information about

Earth’s surface.

7. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is computer-based mapping

technology which links geographical information to places.

Good work! Now it’s your turn! Think of a 5-7 letter word. Find the countries or states whose names begin with each of the letters. Write the coordinates (NOT THE NAMES) for those countries/states on the back of this paper. Trade papers with a friend and see if you can solve each other’s secret message!
