DISCOVERY CANYON CAMPUS 7th & 8th Grade VOLLEYBALL 2019-2020

We are very excited that you have decided to participate in our quality volleyball program for 7th and 8th graders! Our volleyball program is committed to skill development, participation, and sportsmanship.

Registration will take place August 5-August 16, 2019. Registration will be closed for the Interscholastic team on August 16, no exceptions. The cost of the program is $45.00 per participant. The registration fee will not be refunded after the second week of practice. We have two teams, Intramural and Scholastic. Intramural girls will not participate in tryouts and will be automatically enrolled in Intramural Volleyball. EVERYONE makes the Intramural teams.

If your player knows that they would like to play Intramural only, please make sure to check the IM box on the registration form

If your student is interested in the Interscholastic team they will need to try out. Only 12 players are selected for each grade level (7th and 8th). The tryout schedule will be as follows:

7th grade tryouts will be Friday, August 16 from 3:20-5:45 pm in the DCC MS Gym 8th grade tryouts will be Monday, August 19 from 3:20-5:45 pm in the DCC MS Gym

Player's placement on the interscholastic teams will be communicated via email no later than 9:00 pm on Monday, August 19.

This year we will be hosting a brief parent informational night. It will be held in the middle school gym on Thursday, August 15, 2019 from 3:30-4:00. The first day of practice will be Tuesday, August 20, 2019. The intramural team will practice MondayThursday from 3:20-4:45. Intramural players must be picked up by 5:00 pm. If the IS team has a game, the IM team will not practice that day. The Interscholastic team will practice Monday through Friday from 4:45-5:45 pm. All IS players must be picked up no later than 6:00 pm. IS players are welcome to practice with the IM team. A game schedule is attached to this registration packet in order that you may schedule other activities without conflict.

To participate in Interscholastic Sports: Students must maintain passing grades in all subjects and not have more than one D. Students must attend all practices prior to competition-unless absence is excused or approved by the coach. Students CANNOT receive a discipline referral to the office within the week prior to an athletic event. Students must be present at school for at least half the school day.

Buses will transport students one-way for our in-district and out-of-district games. Parents are responsible for picking up their child at the game location. Athletes are required to wear the supplied uniform in its entirety for all games/ matches. Only religious exemptions will be grated at the discretion of the Athletic Director.

For participation in our volleyball program, the following requirements must be met:

1) A current physical (not more than 1 year old and valid through the last game) must be on file in the school office. Students cannot pr actice without a cur r ent physical. Attached is a copy of the pr oper form, "Middle School Statement by Physician and Parent for Athletic Participation." This form is also available in the school office. Registration will not be taken unless the student has a physical.

2) Return the registration to Mrs. Manley in the main office: (1) completed Athletic Registr ation/ Emergency Information Form, (2) Physical Form, (3) a signed Parent/Guardian Permission, and (4) $45.00 athletic fee (checks can be made payable to DCC, please write your child's name and grade on the check or payment can be made online at )

Students who participate in sports should plan to attend all practices. If a student must miss a practice, a coach must be notified unless the student has been excused from school all day.

Dear Students, Parent(s)/Guardian,

We are writing this letter in an attempt to make clear the philosophy of the Discovery Canyon Middle School Volleyball Program.

The volleyball program at Discovery Canyon is two-pronged; intramural and interscholastic . Intramural (IM) is where everyone participates regardless of skill level and is more flexible if girls need to be gone from practice. During intramural days, there will be ongoing skill work as well as game time practice. We will be doing different drills and stations to help develop basic volleyball skill sets. On interscholastic game days, at DCC or away, there will be no intramurals.

The interscholastic (IS) team is a traveling team that will compete against other schools in and out of district. The schedule of these games, practices, and expectations are attached with this letter. Twelve seventh grade girls and twelve eighth grade girls will be chosen after an evaluation period during which a number of adult coaches will have input. Ultimately, twelve girls at seventh and twelve girls at eighth will represent Discovery Canyon on the interscholastic teams. Due to the short season, it is imperative that an Interscholastic player be available for every practice, no exceptions!

We are aware that some girls have the impression that the interscholastic team is the only team to play on; that is a misunderstanding. Although the interscholastic team plays other schools, the intramural teams practice and play each other in order to gain experience and essential skills necessary for a person to try out for an interscholastic team at a later date if they so desire. It is Discovery Canyon's philosophy to use the intramural program to build and establish the skills necessary to strengthen the interscholastic program.

Hopefully, this information gives you a clear understanding of how middle school volleyball functions at Discovery Canyon. We look forward to seeing as many seventh and eighth grade girls as possible coming out to play the great game of volleyball!!
