Classroom Rules and Procedures: “What is expected in the Classroom”
All methods of instruction will focus on student acquisition of the following skills:
• Realizing that READING is homework
• Knowledge of U.S. Geography
• Knowledge of post-1865 U.S. History
• Increasing note taking skills
• Reading and analyzing more demanding material
• Becoming comfortable with primary source documents
• Knowing how to research
• Developing "a sense of history"
• Learning the basics of analytical essay writing
• Thinking and learning chronologically
• Learning the logic of cause and effect
• Developing intelligent discussion/oral presentation skills
• Learning to read and follow directions
• Taking timed tests and writing word-limited essays
Learning Environment:
• This is a rigorous introduction to post-1865 U.S. History. You are expected to be actively involved in the class and to stay caught up with your reading and other assignments.
• Always show proper courtesy and respect for yourself, classmates, and teacher.
• Be on time, have your supplies and be in your seat working on the daily warm-up when the bell rings.
• Ask questions and share your ideas with the class--we all learn from each other.
• 3 bathroom passes per quarter
Textbook:
ONLINE Text: The American Journey by Appleby, Brinkley, McPherson (Glencoe/McGraw-Hill, 2003)

Necessary Classroom Materials:
• A 2.5-3 inch three-ring binder with pockets, 5 dividers and notebook paper. Students must maintain an orderly notebook. Failure to do so will result in poor success as notes and materials are necessary for tests and other assignments.
• 1 composition notebook
• Pocket folder (for team)
• Packets of markers, colored pencils, scissors and 3 glue sticks to use on projects.
• Tissues (greatly appreciated)
Grading and Assessment:
HOMEWORK:
• Homework will be assigned on a regular basis to enhance the lesson.
• All work must be handed in ON TIME!!!
• Late work will be held to a higher standard and not accepted after the week it was due
PROJECTS:
• All project assignments are to be turned in on the specified date.
• There will be a 10% grade penalty for every class the project is not turned in.
TESTS:
• Review power points will be posted on my webpage.
• A review sheet will be assigned and reviewed to help with test preparation.
RETAKE POLICY:
Reinforcement of Concepts:
• Students who attain an 80-89% on a test will create a content product as specified by the teacher in preparation for a retest on the material. The retest format will be short answer and/or essay.
The higher grade will be chosen as the final Test Grade, not to exceed 90%.
• Students who attain a 70%-79% on a test will make test corrections in preparation for retesting on the material. The higher grade will be chosen as the final Test Grade, not to exceed 90%.
Tutoring with the Teacher:
• Students who attain below a 69% on a test will be re-taught by the teacher during resource or after school. A revised test will be given once the student has mastered the missed material. The higher grade will be chosen as the final Test Grade, not to exceed 90%
MAKE-UP WORK
• Students are responsible for obtaining all missed work, including notes, homework, and assessments for each class they have missed.
• Upon return to school, students are expected to check the class make-up folder for any missed assignments. You may also check the class web site.
• Pre-assigned work will not receive an extension
QUARTER GRADE:
• Summative Category 90% Includes Tests (60%) and Essays/Projects (30%)
• Formative Category 10% Includes Homework and Class work
