Course Description:The Reading and Writing Intervention Class is designed to prepare students to meet the challenging literacy requirements of the 21st Century. Reading efficiency is enhanced through students’ increased understanding of how to construct meaning from narrative, expository, and digital literature. The ongoing development and reinforcement of comprehension strategies promotes independent reading and learning. Opportunities for self-selection of reading material further promote independent reading, as students chose literature that will challenge and be at a high interest level. Integrated units will allow students to read and study literature that connects with the learning that is taking place in other content areas. A variety of assessment tools will be used to show growth and achievement of the outcomes below.Grading System:All grading will be done on a point system. The points will be divided into these 4 categories:1. Interactive Notebook2. Projects3. Assessments4. Participation/Daily WorkComponents Reading:Read-Aloud:I will begin many classes with read-alouds. During these read-alouds students will be exposed to a variety of literature. Reading aloud to children and young-adults has many benefits such as providing a model of fluent reading and reading strategies, increasing knowledge of the world, increasing familiarity with written language, increasing vocabulary, increasing reading interest, and exposing individuals to different authors and genres.Mini-Lesson:These are short lessons that provide direct instruction and guided practice of skills and strategies. Mini lessons are followed by independent practice of the skills and strategies, which will take place in a variety of activities.Vocabulary:Students will determine the meaning of challenging vocabulary, using a variety of approaches. This vocabulary will come from the mentor texts along with their independent reading books.Interactive Reading Notebooks:These notebooks are a very important tool we use in the classroom. Students use these notebooks to record new learning, process their thinking, and apply the new learning. These are meant to be a useful resource for the students and a place of reference throughout the year. It is important that these notebooks stay organized and display 7th grade work.Independent Reading:Students will be given time to silently read during class from both assigned literature and/or independent reading books. Students will be encouraged to read from a variety of genre.Home Reading:All students are also expected to read outside of class. As readers, we improve by reading! Students will have conversations and journal about their home reading.Book Talks:Book Talks are short, engaging presentations that are designed to share “good” books with others. Students will present Book Talks to their peers on books that they have read outside of class.Literature Circles:Literature Circles encourage students to have thoughtful discussions and dig deeper into the text, while also giving students a chance to apply the skills and strategies they are learning. Students will participate in Literature Circles periodically throughout the school year.FocusLook CloserConcentrate ................
