As the teacher and facilitator of this learning community, I aim to foster an enjoyment of learning and the desire to grow in academic achievement and character. As a learning community, we will be kind to each other and ourselves, make good mistakes and learn from them, and work well with one another.COURSE OUTLINEThroughout each unit, we will explore how geography, societies, politics and technology interact to shape cultural ideas, advances and relationships between regions. We will also examine connections between these ancient civilizations and the modern world. Eras to be covered include:Fall of Roman EmpireIslamic World 400 A.D. – 1500sAfrica 400 A.D. – 1500sChina 400 A.D – 1500s Japan 400 A.D. – 1500sMiddle Ages in Western Europe 400 A.D. – 1500s The Renaissance and ReformationThe Enlightenment and Scientific RevolutionThe Age of ExplorationCLASSROOM MATERIALSHandouts and worksheets will be dispersed with holes ready for placement in your binders. OR we will cut things out and glue them in their journal. Some assessments will have multiple grades based on how many standards are addressed. Please refer to the Student Handbook for specific West End grading scale information.Overall grades are based on work products that address grade level standards.Students will have multiple opportunities to demonstrate proficiency. All attempts to demonstrate mastery of the standards must be completed before the last week of the grading period. Reassessments are permitted at teacher discretion.Students will be given additional opportunities to show mastery of standards thus extra credit will not be assigned.HOMEWORK & LATE WORKHomework will be assigned at the discretion of the teacher. This may include worksheets, reading assignments, projects or online research. Failure to keep up with homework will affect your performance in my class. I will do HW checks at the beginning of class when work is due. Even though HW is weighted at zero in my gradebook, it will still be marked if you completed the assignment. Ex: If you complete the HW assignment, you will get a 1 in the gradebook. If you do not, you will receive a 0. (Please note: since it is weighted at zero in the gradebook it DOES NOT AFFECT your overall grade). This is just a way for you, your guardians, and me to keep track of what you are and aren’t completing as practice. ABSENT PROCEDUREStudents who miss class are responsible for making sure they get any missed assignments. I cannot and will not remind you of your absence and give you the work you missed. Students must come to me for any missed work and keep track of any late/missing assignments that need to be turned in.7th GRADE TEAM TARDY POLICYA student will be marked as tardy if they are not in the classroom ready to work when the bell rings. Students in the hallway when the bell rings will have to report to the “Ready To Learn” area on the 1st floor for restorative practice. When a student is tardy to any of core classes five times, they will be asked to eat lunch in an assigned teacher's classroom. While in that classroom they will complete any bell work assignments missed due to tardiness, or any other work deemed necessary. They will also complete a written IB reflection regarding the consequences of their tardiness and how they will correct this behavior. MS.
