Did you Know?: Since 1970, the Feast of the Epiphany in the United States has been observed the Sunday between January 2nd and January 8th.

Epiphany is one of the oldest Christian feasts and has been observed since the end of the second century. Around the world, Epiphany is a public holiday( known as the Twelfth Night or Kings' Day) and celebrated on January 6th. In the German-speaking lands, groups of young people called "Sternsinger" (star singers) travel from door to door dressed as the three Wise Men carrying a star attached to a broom handle. In Italy, La Befana visits the children on the eve of January 6 to fill their socks with candy and presents. The King's Cake is served on Epiphany with a trinket in the middle to represent blessings.

THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD –JANUARY 4, 2015

–APRIL 13, 2014

- SEPTEMBER 18, 2011

, 2011

Dear Friends:

The Gospel of Matthew is the only Gospel with an account of a visit to the newborn Christ child by the three Magi. Popularly referred to as kings or astrologers, magi were even referred to as magicians throughout the centuries leading up to the birth of Jesus. The Gospel reference to them as “wise men” is an appropriate assignation as these wise men were considered to have possessed esoteric knowledge of such areas such as astronomy, alchemy, et al. The Magi or Wise Men are indeed wise because they receive God’s invitation, the appearance of a star, and then act on it—the go in search of the Christ child, the King of the Jews. In contrast to their excitement and joy is the “greatly troubled” demeanor of Herod and all of Jerusalem. Herod is not at all happy about this turn of events. His power is at stake. Unsuccessfully, he tries to manipulate the magi into informing him about the whereabouts of this newborn king of the Jews. Once again a heavenly dream comes to the rescue and the magi outsmart Herod. For us, the light of the star becomes iconic as it is this star which points the way to Jesus. We place a star upon our Christmas trees to remind us that Christmas is all about Christ and the inbreaking of God’s saving love in the world. This feast of the Epiphany is a little Christmas as Christ is manifested or revealed to the world. We are all called to joyously seek him and worship him. We are called to joyously share his love so as to make him manifest.

With peace and joy!

Estimados amigos:
