RE: Independent Reading Book Selection

Date: February, 2014

Dear Parent/Guardian:

As English teachers, one of our goals is to help students become “life-long-readers”. In moving towards that goal, we are asking students to select an independent reading book.

Students must select a book related to one of the following themes in young adult literature. While reading, students will complete writing responses and meet in groups to discuss the books with other students who are reading books with the same theme.

Themes in Young Adult Literature

▪ Journey/Quest

▪ Conflict with Parents/Authority Figures

▪ Peer Pressure (Isolation vs. Conformity)

▪ Survival

▪ Friendships/Popularity

▪ Siblings/Family issues

The librarians have pulled books from the library shelves and created book carts for each theme, but students are not limited to this list. We are otherwise leaving the final decision up to you and your child.

Since we have not read all of the books from which students may choose, it is impossible for us to verify that all of the content is suitable for all 8th grade students. With that in mind, please consider both your child’s maturity level and reading aptitude as you discuss his or her book choice.

We ask that students bring both this signed letter and the book to class on: March 3rd

Students will need to finish their book by: March 21st and are therefore encouraged to begin reading right way.

Thank you for your continued support.

Kindly,

Allison Cragg Angela Timmins
