|Grade Level: 8th |Subject: American History |Teacher: Mrs. Heldt |

Hello and welcome to 8th grade American History!

DESCRIPTION

This class covers material from the American Revolution and creation of our government, and then moves onto WWII and the events that occur from that war to current times. The students will be working in a number of different ways to succeed in social studies. They can be expected to work individually and in groups on projects (such as a political cartoon, newspaper, or poster) papers, debates, and classroom simulations (such as a mock Supreme Court case). You will need a 9x7 black and white composition book that will act as your class notebook. (Wal-Mart often has these for $.25) You will need it every day as well as folder of some kind to keep worksheets/handouts.

CLASS POLICIES

1. Attendance: Students must not only attend every class, but also be on time, be prepared, and take an active part in class.

2. Plagiarism and Cheating: Plagiarism includes copying or paraphrasing another’s words, ideas, or facts without crediting the source; submitting a paper written by someone else, either in whole or in part, as one’s own work; or submitting work previously submitted for another course or instructor. Plagiarism, cheating, or other forms of academic dishonesty on any assignment will result in zero credit for assignment and further disciplinary action.

3. Homework Submission: Homework is required as additional reinforcement of concepts presented in class. It is my goal to make the weekly homework available online every Monday, with a due date of that Friday. All assignments should be written in your child’s agenda. Students are required to complete all assignments by the due dates. Late homework will not be accepted unless the student has an excused absence or extenuating circumstances.

4. Make-up Exams/Late Work: Upon returning to school following an absence, it is the student’s responsibility to get the work they missed. The students will be shown the particular area in the classroom where they can find the work missed as well as my web site where homework will be posted. Late work will not be accepted nor will make-up exams be offered, except under extraordinary circumstances with appropriate documentation. Excuses such as “crashed computers,” “lost flash drives,” or “empty printer ink cartridges” will not be accepted. It is suggested that all work be saved both on your computer’s hard drive and on a portable storage device.

5. Food/Drink: Only fruit, vegetables and plain drinking water are allowed in room 204/205. No exceptions!!

The final grade will be determined as follows:

➢ Assessments (Tests, Quizzes & Final Exams) = 40%

o Tests will be worth 50-100 points, Quizzes worth 5-15 points, and Final Exams 100-250 points.

o 1st quiz is scheduled for Friday, August 12th

➢ Homework/Projects = 35%

o Projects can be of short duration (1 week) or long duration (multiple weeks)

o First project will be a timeline assigned August 15nd and due August 22nd. The 2nd project will be a Facebook role play that will assigned August 19th and due August 26th.

➢ Classwork/Participation = 25%

o Participation will be a set number of points per day that the student starts with as they enter class. Any behavior that deters from their learning or the learning of others will result in the loss of daily points.
