AR Johnson Health Science and Engineering Magnet School 8th Grade Physical Science SyllabusDear Parents and Guardians,4431030224091500My name is Kristina Istre (pronounced “East”) and I will be teaching the 8th grade science class this year. I have been teaching for twenty-four years and am a very proud mother of a 21 year-old son, Nicholas, who is a junior at Georgia Southern University. I am excited to start this year with the fantastic opportunity of teaching all of the amazing 8th grade students. I believe that teachers need to work closely with parents and students to provide a positive atmosphere of communication and consistency. I will work diligently to educate your child so that this year here at AR Johnson will be a time of growth and success. I am confident that we are going to have a productive and successful school year. I thank you in advance for your support, and I look forward to a terrific year here at AR Johnson Magnet School! Sincerely,K. Istre Email: istrekr@BOE.Richmond.k12.ga.us Science Class Goals and DescriptionsWelcome to Physical Science! This year you are taking a high school science class worth a high school credit upon successful completion. High school Physical Science covers both chemistry (during the 1st semester) and physics (during the 2nd semester). This class will require you to perform numerous hands-on activities (projects, presentations and experiments), as well as weekly quizzes and monthly tests. The goals of this class are to increase your ability to use critical thinking skills, to be able to relate physical science to the real world; including your other courses, and to be able to use technology for Physical Science knowledge acquisition and demonstration. This is a difficult course and requires full student participation. Successful completion of this course is a team effort including the student, parent/guardian, and the teacher. My goal is for students’ to want to participate by creating a more exciting and enjoyable learning experience! If you would like to view the standards for Physical Science, please click on the Standards tab on Ms. Istre’s webpage.Grade Distribution: Summative Assessments (Tests, Daily Notebook, Projects): 50%Formative Assessments (Classwork, Labs, Mini Projects, Quizzes): 40% Homework (Assigned at the beginning of the week and posted on webpage): 10% Late classwork will have a 10% point deduction for each day it is late. Late HW will not be accepted unless student was absent with an excused absence.** The breakdown of the Physical Science grade can be compared to stepping stones. In order to be successful on the summative and formative assessments, students need to understand the concepts. This understanding is gained through taking notes, maintaining an organized Physical Science notebook, completing classwork and homework- as assigned in a timely manner. The final Physical Science grade is calculated in five parts:20%- 1st Nine Week’s Average20%- 2nd Nine Week’s Average20%- 3rd Nine Week’s Average20%- 4th Nine Week’s Average20%- EOCT (End of Course Test)- This is a standardized test taken and assessed through the Georgia Department of Education in early May. *Please remember that not all work that is turned in will earn a numeric score. Some assignments will be checked for understanding to help determine whether remediation or enrichment is needed. Corrected papers will be returned and required to be included in the student’s notebook. **Also, the yearly average in Physical Science represents the first average to count towards the high school GPA and HOPE scholarship eligibility. Extra Help and Grade Recovery: Extra help/tutoring is available after school on Wednesday from 3:25-4:00. (Student must See Ms. Istre in advance to schedule.) Students who received a score below 70 on most tests will be allowed to redo the test by submitting a Request to Retest form. The form must contain both the student’s signature and that of a parent or guardian. The original test and evidence of preparation (flashcards, study sheets, etc.) must be attached. Students who fail a grading period will be provided online Grade Recovery assignments to assist in remediation. Successful completion of the assignments will earn the student a passing grade for the quarter. *Parents, you are encouraged to log-in to the Parent Portal of Infinite Campus to check your child’s ongoing progress in each class.Classroom Rules:1.
