The Inside Story: Behind the Scenes of the Cuban Missile Crisis

By Special Correspondent, Ms. G.

During the period of October 16-October 29, 1962, our country faced one of the most dangerous crises in our history. The cold war was at its peak and the United States and Russia were engaged in a nuclear arms race. Since World War II, the United States emerged as the most powerful country in the world. The nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki showed the world our might and power. After World War II, communist Russia occupied many of its neighboring countries in Eastern Europe. Russia annexed other Eastern European States and became the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union was the biggest country in the world and the most powerful in Europe. During the past few years, the USA and the Soviet Union were battling for supremacy. Things came to a critical state when our country’s youngest president, John F. Kennedy, took office in 1961.

President Kennedy represented the youthful optimism of the country when he was elected in 1960. The soviet leader, Nikita Khrushchev, wanted to test President Kennedy’s strength by ordering nuclear missiles to be installed in Communist Cuba, only 90 miles off the coast of Florida. On October 16, 1962, the CIA informed President Kennedy that agents detected the presence of Soviet missiles on the island. For six days, from October 16-22nd, Kennedy and his staff discussed how to handle the situation without informing the American public of the missiles. On October 22nd, President Kennedy told America about the missiles and his plans to put a naval blockade around Cuba.

On October 24th, Soviet ships approached the American Naval Blockade. The world held its breath, believing that nuclear war between the two super powers was inevitable. A standoff took place for days. Finally, the Soviet ships turned around and went back home. During the standoff, President Kennedy vowed not to invade Cuba. It appeared as though Kennedy stood firm; however, what the public did not learn until many years after the crisis was that Kennedy blinked. Years after the deaths of Kennedy and Khrushchev, documents revealed that Kennedy brokered a secret deal with Khrushchev. Kennedy agreed to remove missiles the US had stationed between the border of Turkey and Russia. This little deal is the secret behind the Cuban Missile Crisis. The Cold War has been ongoing some three years after the death of President Kennedy and we are finally learning what happened behind the scenes of the Cuban Missile Crisis.

The Beatles in Help!

By Ms. G.

What do you get when you combine the world’s most popular rock and roll band with the the Hollywood scene? Lots of fun, great music and a huge hit, The Beatles’ new movie, Help! turns out to be a rollicking good time. The movie pits the “Fab Four” against an evil “great swami” (Leo McKern) of a fictional eastern cult. The movie starts with the cult trying to sacrifice a beautiful woman to a fictional god in order to gain the god’s favor. Unbeknownst to our four mop-top heros, the ancient, sacrificial ring slips off the woman and onto Ringo’s finger. What happens next is a series of crazy chases with some great songs in the mix. The title song is a classic. Paul’s vocals on The Night Before and She’s a Woman are solid, while Ticket to Ride and You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away are sure-fire Lennon classic hits.

Although reports from the set indicate some tension between the lads, you would not know it from the gorgeous harmonies and tight playing of the band. Help! may not have a meaningful plot, or any real plot at all, but the truth is that the movie works as a musical record of the greatest rock band in history.

Run to see Help!

Help! Stars John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Leo McKern. Rated PG
