Class Objective: 9th grade Health education provides a means to develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle and good decision making. The goals of this course are to introduce and explain the concept of wellness; provide current information on health issues; assist the student in developing a balanced lifestyle through understanding of the inter-relatedness of the physical, mental and emotional realms in making a healthy individual; provide an opportunity for students to examine and evaluate their personal relationships; and provide opportunities for the development of decision-making and critical-thinking skills.

 

Class Assessments:

1. Lesson/Unit Quizzes - 10%

2. Unit Tests-30%

3. Projects – Individual and Group Assignments-30%

4. Class Participation- 20%

5. Homework- 10%

• Intro to Health and Wellness

• Decision Making and Problem Solving

• Mental Health

• Alcohol, Tobacco, and other drugs

• Human Sexuality- HIV/AIDS education

• Nutrition

 

 

 

This health class will be extremely interactive with many hands on activities as well as group activities.

 

Our curriculum is designed to help students understand that the decisions they make can affect the quality and quantity of their lives both now and in the future. Our health lessons and activities focus on the following National Health Standards:

1. Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention.

2. Students will demonstrate the ability to access valid health information and health promoting products and services.

3. Students will demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and reduce health risks.

4. Students will analyze the influence of culture, media, technology and other factors on health.

5. Students will demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication and skills to enhance health.

6. Students will demonstrate the ability to use goal setting and decision-making skills to enhance health.

7. Students will demonstrate the ability to advocate for personal, family and community health.

  

Classroom Activities:

• Participation in an active manner for discussions, feedback, and demonstration.  

• Preparation for assignments and quizzes.

• Online activities and assignments..

 

Materials Needed for Class:

• Binder - Students must have a binder and folder by the end of the second week in health.

• Student Laptops – Students will be utilizing classroom laptops several times throughout the course.

• Writing Utensils – Pens or Pencils

 

Classroom Behavior: Follow all classroom rules. Certain topics that will be covered in class require each student to act in a mature manner. 

 

Expectations:  Respect for all. 

Each student is responsible for their individual behavior, language, staying on task in class and being prepared for class.  Students will allow me to teach, and other students to learn.

 

Make-Up Work: Students are responsible for obtaining and completing all assignments due to absences. When a student returns from being absent, please see Ms. Bernstein at the beginning of the class.
