Subject: CyberTax 2010-41: AARP, AARP Foundation and NASCAR

News has been widespread about AARP and AARP Foundation’s collaboration with Hendrick MOTORSPORTS and NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion Jeff Gordon on the Drive to End Hunger. The Drive to End hunger is a three-year sponsorship of the No. 24 car that captures the engagement and enthusiasm of NASCAR fans, America’s leading companies, and organizations like AARP to solve the problem of hunger among older Americans.

In the last months under the leadership of AARP Foundation’s new President, AARP Foundation has approved a new vision and mission statement. Its newly formed vision statement is: Envisioning a country free of poverty where no older person feels vulnerable. Its restated mission is: The Foundation is dedicated to serving vulnerable people 50 plus by creating solutions that help them secure the essentials and achieve their best life. Addressing hunger for those age 50 and older was quickly targeted as a needed AARP Foundation focus to help seniors secure the essential of food.

In an exceptional demonstration of AARP’s unyielding support of the Foundation’s work to end the critical issue of senior hunger, AARP -- not AARP Foundation -- has assumed the upfront cost of Drive to End Hunger. AARP expects to recoup the investment, and more -- as other organizations join the effort over the next three race seasons. The initial cost is a small fraction of what this effort will raise to help AARP Foundation end hunger among older Americans, as additional funds from the sponsorship will come to AARP Foundation to fight hunger.

The effort is not just hunger awareness, but a new method for AARP Foundation fundraising. It is the AARP Foundation which will benefit from the outcome of the sponsorship which is a call to NASCAR fans to financially support the Foundation's Drive to End Hunger effort by texting contributions. It is ultimately the six million older Americans in this country who face the threat of being hungry who will benefit from the income raised by the sponsorship.

Being hopeful that rising tides will lift all boats, money AARP Foundation directly receives to support the hunger work could mean less support needed from general contributions. I believe our new President's acumen and creative thinking around fundraising will, again, benefit us all.

I see opportunity in the AARP Foundation's future and am quite optimistic about its long-term ability to supports its work, including AARP Tax-Aide and much, much more as AARP Foundation continues to find new ways to ensure seniors have access to needed essentials!

Leaders, please share this information with volunteers who may not receive CyberTax.
