WINNING BACK OPPORTUNITY

for struggling older Americans and their families

Who We Are

AARP Foundation is AARP's affiliated charity, dedicated to helping struggling older adults and their families to get back on track so they can feel like good providers again.

Who We Serve

Americans age 50 and older face choices and pressures unlike those of any other age group ? choices few could have prepared for. We focus on four priorities ? hunger, income, housing and isolation. This work is supported by a longstanding commitment to legal advocacy on behalf of older Americans everywhere.

How We Serve

We work side-by-side with hardworking, trusted organizations in communities across the nation to help the growing numbers of older people in crisis every day. Our work involves investing in innovative approaches through grants and connecting the struggling 50+ to programs, resources and benefits to help improve the lives of vulnerable older Americans in communities across the country.

Our vision is a country free of poverty, where no older person feels vulnerable.

From the President

Dear Friends, Our world needs people of action. People willing to help others in need. Older adults living in poverty don't need pity: They need courageous people who will lend a hand. Every day individuals and corporations join us in action. The gifts we receive help to provide nutritious and regular meals, new and marketable employment skills and a safe and affordable place to call home. Because of the support we receive from our volunteers and supporters, struggling older adults are able to begin to get back on the road to opportunity. Thank you.

"I moved to Atlanta, where my son and grandchildren live. But it cost a lot more than I thought. To keep my pension from running out, I often didn't eat much in the last week of the month. Then I heard that AARP Foundation and AARP Georgia were helping people apply for food stamps. I called, although I was doubtful and embarrassed. They were so helpful! My first SNAP benefits arrived in July, and now I have enough to eat all month." ? SNAP recipient

? Launched the AARP Foundation Prepaid MasterCard brought to you by Green Dot, a retail prepaid debit card, designed to help older unbanked and underbanked adults to safely and securely manage their money and save.

"In 2009, I received a week's notice that my job had been eliminated ? I'd worked there 15 years. Later that year I received my B.S. in alternative medicine and $30,000 worth of student loans. I must have sent out a thousand online applications but I never got one response. I finally began passing out my resume at every doctor's office in the area, but that didn't work either ? once people found out I was close to retirement age, they didn't want to talk anymore. At the unemployment office I saw a poster for SCSEP, and I went right over. They helped me find a training position as a grant writer for the local United Way; I've been there 18 months. I'm still looking for full-time work now, and SCSEP has made all the difference." ? Deborah Salim
