Bay of Pigs invasion

Please create an interactive map the features “phases” like the Mexican War map found here:

Instead of phases, we will use “dates”. It would be helpful if the Bay of Pigs interactive played through completely when students click “next” – see below. Afterwards, students should be able to go back and review each date’s events and animations separately. The symbols and map should be a composite of the information found on the map Lars found (Map 1) (01-A)%20Giron%20Battle%20Map.JPG and one I found, Map 2

Title screen

See SB1 below - The first screen of the map should be a title screen with a map of Cuba (similar to the one show below – remove arrow but leave Havana and Guantanamo Bay).

Title: Bay of Pigs Invasion

Text: The Bay of Pigs invasion was an unsuccessful attempt by U.S.-trained exiled Cuban forces to invade Cuba and spark an uprising among the Cuban people – one that would overthrow Fidel Castro’s anti-American government.

Next button: please include a “Next” or “begin button that takes students to the Map interface. When the “next” button is selected, the view should zoom into the map of Cuba to the portion that includes the Bay of Pigs, and the view shown in detail map below. This effect gives students an idea of where in Cuba the Bay of Pigs takes place. Please use “blue” for all exile symbols (soldiers, ships, etc.) and “red” for all Cuban symbols.

Map Interface

See “interface” below for a suggestion of what the interface could look like…feel free to alter this if you can come up with something better. This is the view that comes up after students select “next”.

April 15, 1961

Animation - See SB 2 - Two or three bombers fly across the screen into Cuba. After a few seconds they return.

Text: On April 15 the CIA launched a surprise air attack against Cuban air bases and air fields. Following international outrage over the attacks, President Kennedy canceled additional airstrikes scheduled for that day. The missions were designed to destroy any remaining elements of the Cuban air force.

April 17, 1961

Animation - See SB3 - Six ships move into the Bay of Pigs region (two near Blue Beach, and two near Red Beach)…One of the ships headed to Red Beach runs aground (see sunken ship symbol on Map 2). Next, landing craft leave the ships and take soldiers to Red and Blue beaches. Soldiers secure the beaches. Planes fly into the screen and drop paratroopers at the two locations marked on the map. Lastly, Cuban aircraft sink two of the remaining exile ships (please use explosion icons) before the last three flee out of the scene.

Text: Four 2,400-ton transports and two supporting vessels landed 1,511 CIA trained Cuban exiles at two landing zones located near the Bay of Pigs on April 17th. One group landed at Blue Beach and the other at Red Beach. One of the transports to Red Beach ran aground and the men were forced to swim to shore without most of their equipment. After encountering light resistance, the exiles at both beaches moved inland to secure their positions. Following the invasion, exile aircraft dropped paratroopers at locations near the landing sites. The exiles lost additional ships to Cuban fighters before the remaining ships could move to a safe distance away from the coast.

April 18, 1961

Animation - See SB 4 - Show tanks, jeeps, and men approaching Playa Larga. Next, bombers fly in and bomb (please use little explosions icon or effect) the approaching military force. Lastly, the exiles at Playa Larga begin retreating toward Blue Beach. The tanks, jeeps, and men follow the retreating army.

Text: On April 18th exile aircraft bombed Cuban army units approaching Playa Larga. Despite heavy losses, the Cuban military drove the exiles from Playa Larga toward the Bay of Pigs and Blue Beach.

April 19, 1961

Animation - See SB5 - Show all exile forces grouped together near the Bay of Pigs. Show small boats leaving the cost and fleeing to recently arrived US Naval vessels located off the coast. Next, the Cuban military begins bombing the invaders…please use little artillery animations with explosion effects. Lastly, a “white flag” is waved by the invaders to signify their surrender.

Text: Exile aircraft attacked the Cuban military and attempted to resupply forces at Blue Beach on April 19th. Running out of ammunition, exile aircraft were forced to return to their bases in the Caribbean. During the early afternoon, the abandoned exiles were forced into a small beach area at the Bay of Pigs. Some of the invaders managed to escape to waiting US evacuation ships located several miles off the coast. With ammunition and supplies running low and Cuban artillery intensifying, the remaining invaders surrendered. Approximately 1,100 exiles were taken prisoner by the Cuban military.
