The information contained in Shoptalk is read by thousands of subscribers from aspiring journalism students to network news presidents. Generally, Shoptalk is considered required reading in the television news industry.

CREATIVE

2006 Executive Producer writer for a 4:30-second videotape for the Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders. Dr. Theresa Chisolm, specifically requested a videotape that could be distributed to local PTA chapters. The tape discusses the low cost and availability of testing children with potential communication disorders.

Executive Producer, researcher, writer (taken to production by a group of advanced

seniors) for a 30-minute documentary celebrating USF’s 50th anniversary. Working with the local public television station WUSF, negotiated a prime-time run for the program.

Working with the local Education Channel cable operation I negotiated 4 additional runs for the above mentioned program. Notified that the product is a finalist in the Tampa International Film Festival for 2006.

2005 Executive Producer for 3-minute recruitment tape for the English Language Institute.

Department feared it would lose the program if international students were not recruited.

Produced tape which was streamed unto to the Internet.

Executive producer/writer, post for videotape for the School of Nursing. The 3:30 orientation video was designed to convince students to “give back” both in kind and in donations once they’ve completed the program (part of the USF Community Engagement project).

2004 Media coordinator; in conjunction with the university’s Coalition for Science Literacy,

Directed the purchase of commercial campaign and designed the production of two 30-second tapes, which aired on 3 different local stations.

Executive producer of a 4-minute videotape produced and distributed to MacDill Air Force Base Government Retirement Planning Coordinators. Tape designed to recruit retiring Air Force personnel into the math and science teaching field. All media projects part of a USDOE grant and Math and Science Coalition.*

Executive producer/post for 2:30-second public service announcements designed

to bring the community to the university campus to participate in College of Fine Arts performances and displays (School of Music target). Spots aired on the Tampa Education Channel.*

Executive producer/post 3:00 videotape for the Department Social Science. The informational production informs incoming students about Social Science careers and the university’s graduate program. This product also ran on the university in-house cable system.*

2003 Executive producer/researcher-writer/designer/post, of a 30-minute documentary “Living Large” on implications of body image in women. Documentary aired on: The Education Channel, Tiger’s Eye Network, and WSPF. Won a juried showing at the BEA (Broadcast Education Assn. Regional Conference) Nashville, TN, October 3-5, 2003 ( R).*

Executive producer/writer-clearance/post for :30 second public service announcements shot and edited by members RTNDA Student Chapter. The project was an effort by chapter members to work with students in their adopted junior high school and a local community based organization—in this case the YMCA PSA specifically designed for The Learning Channel in Tampa to help viewers understand the correlation between television viewing, inactivity and weight in young people.*

2002 Executive producer/post for 3:45 videotape for the World Language Institute.

The informational production informs incoming students about the university’s language requirements for graduation. The tape runs in the USF dormitory, cable system.*

Executive producer/writer-clearance/post for two :30 second public service

announcements shot and edited by two honors students. The pieces were specifically designed for The Learning Channel in Tampa and involved diversity in the workplace. The project was tremendously successful and received an unprecedented amount of air-play running more than 400 times between April 1 and September 30, 2002. *

2001 Produced, videotaped, edited and posted a three-minute informational videotape

for Student Government Services at their request. The tape was produced in conjunction

or as part of an existing production class producing daily newsfeeds. The tape is currently running on the University Netcast system. *

Produced, videotaped, edited and posted a three-minute recruitment videotape for the University’s Department of Environmental Studies. Tape targets Greek organizations as members are required to complete community service in order to keep franchise. Objective/efforts are coordinated to help department offset budget cuts.

(Summer)Produced, videotaped, edited and posted a 60-second public service announcement

for the Department of Environmental Science and Policy. The psa was designed to recruit public sector volunteers for the University Botanical Gardens. Arranged to have the PSA broadcast on three of Tampa’s four community access channels. *

Executive producer/writer 30-minute television production that aired on WUSF-TV. The 30 minute informational production was called “Tampa’s Music History: A Sentimental Journey.” The documentary aired on May 16, 2001. Used as basis for a professional production for WGBH*.

2000 Produced, videotaped, edited, posted (in conjunction with production students,

a three-minute recruitment videotape (in Spanish) for the College of Arts and Sciences

Distance Learning Program. The tape was streamed onto the Internet for the College of Arts and Sciences. *

As the executive producer/instructor for Florida Focus, our department's daily 90-second newsbreak, I work directly with WUSF, Channel 16 the Public Television station, to provide local news and information to their viewers (Designed the set,graphics, open, format, and style).*

GRANTS

2006 Working with Lynn McDaniel (Florida Science Teacher of the Year 2003)

submitted a grant to the Florida Department of Education asking for funds to

take Stewart Middle and Just Elementary School (High risk, 90% poverty ) school

students on science project adventures. McDaniel will provide the learning experience and SMC students will document their experiences to complete a 30-minute documentary through the term. We expect to make the documentary available to all elementary schools in the state through The Education Channel.

2003 Awarded University of South Florida Research Council & Division of Sponsored

Research. Grant. Money granted as result of having been selected to Chair the 2004 Southeast Colloquium. The SEC is the oldest and most successful regional journalism and mass communication meeting in the United States. My selection as chair of the annual meeting brings the convention to Tampa and allows USF and the Mass Communication faculty to participate as hosts.

2005 Executive Producer, researcher, writer of 30-minute documentary celebrating

USF’s 50th anniversary. Working with an “special” senior group of students our students shot and edited this documentary (included) It aired during prime time on the local WUSF public television station and 3-times on The Education Channel cable operation.

03-04 At the request of; University acting Dean of College of Arts and Science and the head of

the School of Mass Communications, I was asked to participate in the University of South Florida “Community Engagement Workgroup” --an effort by the State Board of Trustees to include our students in a far-reaching community engagement undertaking. As result, students produced public service announcements, news stories, training videos, orientation videos, and corporate videos—all of which have aired—promoting the visibility of the university in the community.

Part of a volunteer effort by the Office of the Associate Vice President for Enrollment and Planning to lecture high school juniors and seniors about careers in Mass Communications, and the future of the telecommunications industry.

Established University of South Florida’s very first chapter for broadcast news majors. The chapter became the 28th chapter in the United States.

00-05 As the instructor for Florida Focus, our department's daily 90 second newsbreak, I

initiated the effort and am charged with making sure that the videotape is produced not only for air on WUSF television nightly but that it is formatted, dubbed, digitized, and brought weekly to the USF library so that the news product can be streamed onto the university’s Netcast system. This process also allows our department to contribute information about our production and news program to prospective students and to the public through a link on the School of Mass Communications home page.

2001/02 Advisor to the Florida Associated Press-Broadcast Division. Involved in coordinating efforts to include more student involvement in the statewide convention. As result of my efforts, for the first time in its history the FAPB allowed student news entries into competition.
