First Grade

Student Readiness

Here are a few important things that would be helpful for students to review before beginning 1st grade.

• Math – be able to count from 1-100, know days of the week and months of the year, know the difference between left and right

• Phonics – identify and know sounds of all 26 letters of the alphabet, section A in WISE Guide

• English – first 4 jingles on the Shurley English Jingle Time CD

• Literature – a few books to pique your child’s interest for 1st grade are Biscuit Series, Dr. Seuss Series, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie Series, and Beatrix Potter Stories

Parent Readiness

It will be helpful for you to become familiar with some of the curriculum before the school year begins.

• Math – Practice addition and subtraction facts at home.

• Phonics – It will be helpful to read pages 27-32, 48-62, 105-109 in the red Spell to Write and Read book before attending Orientation.

• English – If you are unfamiliar with Shurley English, it will be helpful for you to read page 25 in the Student Textbook to better understand the question and answer flow.

• Bible/Egyptian History – We will be covering Genesis and Exodus. It would be beneficial for your child to be familiar with the stories in these books as well as some Egyptian history.

• Science – We will learn about the different organs of the human body in the fall semester and then study animals and their habitats in the spring semester.

• Literature –Begin helping your child to become an independent reader by reading books at home. We will read Bears on Hemlock Mountain and The Courage of Sarah Noble.

• Writing – We will review the proper way to write all the letters of the alphabet. We will also be composing sentences in a journal.

Prepping Curriculum

Completing these few easy steps will make the beginning of the school year much smoother for you and your student.

• White Phonogram and Yellow Rule Cards in the SWR Phonics pack should be cut apart and laminated.

• Bible and Egyptian History Cards should be laminated and placed in ascending order to use at home.
