Which topic have you chosen? A B C D. Why did you choose this topic? ____________ ____________________________________________________________________________

A. Romantic writers are well known for their use of imagery. Write an essay in which you analyze the mood of one of the stories, discussing how the author’s use of imagery affects or creates the mood.

C. Write a character analysis essay in which you analyze Tom Walker or Dr. Heidegger.

D. Write an essay in which you analyze the symbolism in “Masque of the Red Death.”

Thesis Statement: The thesis statement is the “central message” of your essay and the last sentence in your introduction. It states what your essay will be about without writing “This essay will be about.”

• For example, if you are writing a character analysis essay about Abigail Williams in The Crucible, your thesis statement might read: “In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, Abigail Williams was a manipulative, selfish girl who ruined the lives of many people in Salem.”

• This thesis statement tells the reader that your essay will be about

1. The Crucible by Arthur Miller

2. the character, Abigail Williams

3. 2 of her character traits

• What will the 1st body paragraph be about? ______________ The 2nd? ____________

Look above at the topic you chose. Read the prompt. Highlight parts of the prompt that give you an idea of what needs to go in your thesis statement. You should include:

1) title of story & author

2) what you are analyzing (character, mood & imagery, symbolism, romanticism)

Embedding Quotes as Supporting Details in Your Body Paragraphs

First, you will have 2-4 body paragraphs that support your thesis statement (that prove your thesis statement is true). Each body paragraph will have a topic sentence. Supporting details in each paragraph will prove that the topic sentence is true. Each embedded quote in the body paragraphs will be one of those supporting details, helping to prove that your topic sentence is true.

You want to find at least 3 quotes from the story (stories) that help support your body paragraphs, and thus your thesis statement.
