INVESTING IN THE FUTURE - Well, here we are entering our seventh week of school. Time does fly when you are having fun, and I must admit that I am always having a great time being a Brahma. Our kids are amazing and the parent support is awesome. That is one of many things that I love about MAC. There is often this mistaken belief that high school kids don’t need the same support and attention as elementary or middle school kids. I agree that they should be more self-reliant, but they need to know that you are watching. How many times when your child was growing up did you hear “look at me?” Well, they still want you to look, even if they don’t always say so. I am proud to say that the Mac parents are looking. Your support and participation is just as critical now as ever before. In these newsletters, I will try to keep you up to date so that you can be a part of everything we do at MAC. The time you give to your kids is an investment in their success and in the future. Thank you for being a part of your child’s success. Remember, “An investment in our children pays the best interest of all.” Go Brahmas!

Here is all the news for the week:

ANNOUNCEMENTS-

PROGRES REPORTS – Progress Reports for the first six weeks will be available this week.

This is a reminder that NEISD has moved to paperless Progress Reports. This week progress reports will be available online. Progress Reports will be available electronically through family access and student access.  Parents who have request a paper copy will have one sent home.

If a parent does not have a family access account, they can also get the report through their child’s student access account. Online progress reports will be available as early as Tuesday but no later than the end of business Wednesday. These reports affect eligibility. Students in a waivable class must submit their waiver no later than Thursday at 4:30 pm. Students will become ineligible at 4:15 pm on Friday, October 4th. Parents needing help with the online progress report can call the NEISD Help Desk.

FOOD DELIVERIES – We have had a number of students ordering food through Door Dash, Grub Hub, Uber Eats, etc. Please understand we will not authorize or accept food deliveries from third parties such as these. Many parents bring food for their children, and that is your prerogative. However, we will not accept deliveries. Also, you may only bring food for your own child, and not for others. Thank you for your understanding and support.

TOBACCO/VAPE PRODUCTS ON SCHOOL PROPERTY – Prior to the start of the school year a letter was distributed via email to all North East ISD parents which detailed both the dangers of “vaping” – i.e. using electronic cigarettes – and the potential disciplinary consequences that may result from doing so on district property or at a district-sponsored event. I am sending you this additional reminder given that vaping continues to occur on the MacArthur High School campus. In addition to my concern over the health risks this behavior poses, I also need to reiterate my continued intent to recommend expulsion for students who are found to be vaping THC (tetrahydrocannabinol, the principal psychoactive ingredient in marijuana) or have THC in their possession. I feel that this strong stand is imperative not only to remain compliant with state law and the North East ISD Student Code of Conduct, but also to help to deter a behavior that is endangering our students.

The potential health hazards that vaping presents are well documented. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is investigating 6 deaths and more than 380 reported cases of severe lung illness related to vaping and is encouraging users of all ages to stop vaping as they do so. The CDC is working closely with the Food and Drug Administration and state agencies to assess the effects that vaping may have on young people in particular.

Regardless of these findings, possession and use of e-cigarettes/vaping devices remains illegal under state law for persons under 18. All devices, oils, and other paraphernalia are explicitly prohibited by the North East ISD Student Code of Conduct for students of all ages. Confiscated devices, cartridges and oils will be subject to immediate on-campus chemical testing. Students who are in possession of any item which tests positively for THC will be recommended for expulsion as such possession is a state jail felony. Note that possessing or being under the influence of any controlled substance as detailed above can also result in separate criminal penalties as determined by law enforcement.

For the safety and wellbeing of our children, please help me to reinforce the serious safety and disciplinary consequences, which can result from vaping. You can access for additional resources, which may help you to initiate this conversation with your child. Thank you for your continued collaboration as we strive to ensure the safest possible educational environment for all students.

CLEAR BACKPACKS – Thank you so much for your cooperation with the clear backpack policy. Please remember that ALL students who choose to carry a backpack must have a clear backpack. This applies to any bag the student may use to carry their books and/or school items such as messenger bags, briefcases, etc. It does not apply to small purses, gym bags, band cases, dance/cheer equipment bags. We still have clear backpacks available in the principal’s office for $20. Students are not required to have a backpack so please remember, Clear Backpack or No Backpack! Go Brahmas!

ATTENDANCE – If you are picking your child up early for an appointment or any other reason, please make sure that you sign them out at the attendance office. Please do not have them go directly to your vehicle as we will have no record of their leaving and it can show as an unexcused absence. Thank you for your cooperation.

This week we will be holding Assemblies by grade level to go over all behavioral expectations for our students.

UPDATE EMAILS - Many of you do not have a current or correct email address in our system. You are missing out on important communication. Please make sure you take time to go into your Family Access account to update or ensure that you have a correct email entered so that we can adequately communicate with you. The sooner you do this, the better.

ACTIVITIES -

MAC Football – The Brahmas traveled to the far south side of San Antonio, to take on the South San Bobcats. The Brahma defense did an amazing job, holding the Bobcats to only 13 points in the first half. The Brahmas got on the board in the second quarter on a 6-yard pass from Austin Lee to Juan Carrasco. They added to their score in the third quarter on a 31-yard pass from Austin Lee to Juan Carrasco with extra point by Alonzo Escobar. In the fourth quarter, the Brahmas came within 1-point of South San, after a 5 yard pass from Austin Lee to Trey Anderson. However, it would not be enough, as the Brahmas took a close loss to South San.

This week, all 27-6A teams have a week off. The next game for the Brahmas will be on

Their next game will be on Friday, October 11th, when our Brahmas take on Johnson at 7:30 pm at Comalander Stadium. Let’s get out and cheer on our Brahmas! Go Brahma Football!

The doubles team of Charlie Frymann and Jesse Briseno pulled off a three set thriller and brought home a much-needed win. Congrats to the Brahmas. The Brahmas will continue conference play on Monday when they take on the Roosevelt Rough Riders. Go Brahma Tennis!
