Rusnack – Vice President, Account Management, PSCUInvest the time in building your network – ensure that you have a professional profile on LinkedIn if you don’t already have one today.? This allows you to connect with other colleagues, connect with other peers in the credit union industry as a whole and know what is going on online in our space.? This provides an opportunity for you to post thoughtful content such as articles, blogs or pictures from your event like what the HRD Network did last week online on the private Facebook page.? Whether you go to a conference, a chapter meeting, a cocktail mixer at an industry event, then you need to have your business cards handy so that you can make new credit union friends, have colleagues that you can reach out to for best practices sharing, potentially have speakers for your next event or to just meet new people. ?Building a social media profile - allows you to advertise for your credit union, connect with your colleagues, find out the latest industry trends, connect with your partners and have an opportunity to personally build your brand as well.Mentoring – It is important as you continue to build your skills and career that you have a professional mentor that you respect, trust and can bounce ideas, challenges or strategies with as you continue to grow.? I would look for a professional mentor that is someone that you already are familiar with and you want to have as your mentor.? This person should be at least one position/title higher than your current position and someone that definitely has the time to devote to helping you refine your skill set and your craft.? I would ask the person that you want to mentor you the following: (1) are they interested in doing so, (2) do they have at least4-6 hours a month to dedicate to talking with you, and (3) are they open to providing you with insights on how you can advance in your career. The Future of Performance Reviews by Laura Conover - President, Conover Consulting and Dr. Heather Backstrom – President, Backstrom Leadership StrategiesBlending concepts from neuroscience, feedback and performance reviews, Dr. Heather Backstrom and Laura Conover, shared how the changing nature of work points to the need for new performance management models. Setting the stage with some basics related to neuroscience, we learned how feedback can affect the brain including putting it in a threat state. The SCARF model, coined by David Rock, provides tips and strategies to reduce the threat state, making feedback more easily received. We also learned the latest trends toward a strengths-based approach to performance feedback and annual reviews. Likewise, other trends that were presented include that companies are less apt to use ratings and rankings, let alone annual reviews themselves. With again, the trend toward a strengths-based approach where feedback is part of the everyday nature of work. In particular, examples of credit unions who have gravitated toward these trends were presented. Strategic Planning by Dr. Brandi Stankovic – Senior Vice President, CU Solutions GroupDuring this session, we discussed “How to be a Planning Pro” Strategic Planning for Human Resources and Education, getting the most out of our vendors, elevating the conversation, and creating a tangible ROI for our initiatives. ?The session included a brief how to conduct a planning session with your organization or department. Followed by an educational and interactive session surrounding topics such as technology in HR, the future of training and development, the employee experience, succession planning and employee engagement. Groups were able to discuss and work together to create a tangible strategic plan. The session closed with a real-world empathy map surrounding a typical employee - how can we motivate and engage the employee profile. The session was dynamic, interactive and challenged the status quo. Every person walked away with tools and strategies to begin driving change in their organization. Doing What Matters by John Janclaes - President/CEO, Partners Federal Credit UnionJohn shared concepts from his leadership book, Doing What Matters: How Leaders Help Individuals & Organizations Thrive. What was the central message? An organization that learns together grows together. When business leaders foster the development of their managers and staff by providing the resources and environment in which people are encouraged to learn, grow, and realize their full capacity for achievement, everyone benefits. Side by side with this emphasis on learning and progressing is a focus on what the organization can do to serve its members better and grow its business. By maintaining this dual focus, employees are rewarded with opportunities for advancement, monetary gains, and recognition for their contributions, and the enterprise and its members benefit from their combined, continuing advances. Sustaining this dynamic requires that executives, who are the stewards of capital, including human capital, embrace their responsibility for building communities in which personal development is an expectation that is fostered and rewarded. An invitationJohn has developed an online leadership community aimed at inspiring and enlightening leaders across the business spectrum through his book, articles, podcasts and recently released documentary.? We covered a broad overview of insurance in general to ensure everyone had a solid understanding of the fundamentals of insurance coverages.? From there, we delved into the roles that insurance carriers play to set up the remainder of the presentation.? The remainder of the presentation covered the details of fully insured products versus self-funded products and some creative ways to implement those programs.? Attendees left with a deeper understanding of how insurance works and what plan designs might be a good fit for their organization.? cultural diversity and awareness by Ronaldo Hardy - President/CEO, Southwest Louisiana Credit UnionIn a society where voices are being elevated, and people are speaking out for their cause, diversity, inclusion, and equity have become a mandatory focus. Consumers and employees alike are looking to find themselves represented in organizations they interact with.?Building a more inclusive culture focused on equity requires internal inspection first. We must inspect our people, process, and our purpose to determine where we need improvement. Then we must work to build a culture of candor that allows people to express themselves without fear of ridicule or retaliation. We must build a culture of acceptance and appreciation where people feel welcomed and not tolerated. Lastly, we must build a culture of learning. This is not a fad that comes with a quick fix. Instead, it’s a commitment to do the right thing.Legal Update by Cristina Miller, Partner – Styskal, Wiese & Melchione, LLP Highlights include:Recent developments for California EmployersIndependent Contractor Test (CA Supreme Court adopts new test for classification, which applies to all employers)Presumes a worker to be an employee unless all parts of “ABC” test are metIs the worker free from control and direction from hiring entity?
