Algebra 2

Welcome to Algebra II!

In this course, we will explore and interpret real-world problems as well as patterns and their representations (expressions, equations, graphs). We will also explain mathematical relationships verbally and symbolically. We will use technology, such as graphing calculators, which will help you analyze data and recognize patterns more easily.

Throughout Algebra II, we will build a mathematical foundation that will make connections among mathematical concepts and everyday experiences. The course will help prepare you both for the future mathematics courses and for your future careers. If you bring to class your curiosity and willingness to work hard, then I promise this mathematical journey will reward all you put into it!

• Graphing calculator; TI-84 recommended

• Graph paper

Course Policies

Absences and Makeup Work: In the event of an absence, it is the responsibility of the student to find out what assignments were missed and also to pick up any handouts missed. When you return from an absence, you are responsible for the following:

• Turning in any homework that was due the day(s) of your absence

• Reading the textbook section or other material that was used as a resource during your absence

• Getting the homework assignment(s) you missed and updating your class notebook

• Turning in your makeup work

According to school policy, you have three days to turn in missed assignments. However, you should turn in at least one makeup assignment as well as the current assignment each day until you are caught up. If you are absent on a test day, you will be expected to make up the test within 5 days during ESS outside of regular class time.

Class Participation: At times we will all be algebra teachers; therefore, be willing to share your ideas with others and to support your reasoning to help each other understand new ways to solve problems. In other words, participate fully in all class activities. Be “on the court” playing the game, not “in the stands” watching what is going on.

Classroom Rules/Expectations: Algebra II is a lab in which problems are solved in the same ways that mathematicians and other professionals who use mathematics solve problems. Therefore, you will be expected to act like professionals:

• Come to class ready to learn

• Be responsible for your work. Bring supplies and homework every day.

• Be in your assigned seat ready to work when the tardy bell rings.

• Seek additional help if a topic seems difficult or requires alternative approaches to assist in your understanding.

• Work quietly and be respectful of all people and property in the classroom.

Homework Policy: Homework will be assigned almost every school day in order to allow you to explore and practice what you are learning. Doing homework consistently is essential in order to achieve success in math. Homework is given for the purpose of learning new concepts and for practicing old concepts. Each Friday a random homework assignment will be collected. This assignment will be worth 100 points. The percentage is based on the number of problems completed divided by the total number of problems.

For all homework:

• Show all calculations and work, even if you do it in your head or on a calculator

• Explain your reasoning at the conclusion of each solved problem (if asked to do so)

• When you get stuck on a problem, solve it as far as you can, then write a short explanation of your difficulty

• Use your textbook and class notebook as a resource

• Late work will be accepted. You will receive an 85%.

Late work policy: If you do not have the collected assignment on Friday, then you have the option to turn in all of the assignments by the next Monday for an 85%.

In addition, be proactive about creating study groups, using outside resources such as dictionaries and websites, and discussing problems with each other and with me: any and all of these strategies can help you understand the concepts we will be studying more thoroughly.

Grading Policy

Grading Distribution: Two primary kinds of grades are earned in this class to make up 80% of your trimester grade:

• Process grades (Assignments): These are grades you achieve in the process of learning class material. This includes class participation, class work/activities, and homework.

• Product grades (Assessments): These are grades you achieve that show knowledge and mastery of material. This includes quizzes, projects, and tests.

The grades you receive for the trimester in this class are 40% process and 60% product. The remaining 20% of your trimester grade is determined by a cumulative trimester exam.

Types of assessments: Tests will be given at the end of each unit. Quizzes will be given periodically. Quizzes are administered for the purpose of showing the student what areas need to be reviewed and also to indicate what objectives have been mastered.

Progress Reports: Every four weeks, you will be advised of your progress and given a report.

Course Procedures

Work Requirements: Each class lesson will consist of taking notes, practicing new skills, participating in class activities, and correcting homework. A typical week will include three to five homework assignments. A new section will be introduced with the opportunities to ask question over that section the next day. A test will be given when the end of the chapter is completed.

Each homework assignment should consist of the following:

• Name

• Date

• Page (s) and problem numbers when using the textbook

• Completed in pencil

Class Notebook: You will be required to keep a notebook (or binder) containing definitions, explanations, and examples given in class. It should be organized, and each section should be labeled. For example:

• Notes

• Homework

• Quality Core

Personal Statement

If you are having difficulties with any of the topics covered in this course, see me as soon as possible. Keep the following thoughts in mind:

• When you worry, “I can’t do it,” tell yourself, “I can do it, and I just need to figure it out.”

• Good students seek help sooner rather than later. You can always ask for help.

• Solving problems involves asking questions and taking risks.

• Bring a positive attitude and a smile to class.

Additional Information

Extra help: Get extra help when you need it. The math department offers math tutorials during BEARCAT reading time on Tuesday and Thursday. Please feel free to stop by anytime you need assistance. I am usually available after school from 3:10 to 3:30. I will be happy to schedule extra help sessions for anyone who requests them. Extra help is also available after school through the Extended School Services program. An ESS schedule will be posted in the classroom at the beginning of each trimester.

Work Hard and Be Nice to People

You will learn something every day if you pay attention

Wrong is wrong even if everyone is doing it, Right is right even if no one is doing it

Behavior Syllabus: The behavior syllabus is an explanation of the expectations for behavior in this classroom. Included in the syllabus are descriptions of behaviors for several procedures or events that will take place throughout the trimester. Students are expected to…………..

• ARRIVE ON TIME! This means you should be in your desk ready to begin when the bell rings.

• START on bell ringer without teacher instruction.

• LISTEN to announcements, lectures, and directions.

• ALWAYS come prepared to class with binder and pencil.

• REMAIN SEATED during teacher directed instruction.

• WORK during time given during class.

• COMPLETE any unfinished work from class at home.

• TURN IN late work with a late work pass.

• STUDY for quizzes and tests.

• REMAIN SEATED until bell rings to dismiss class.

• LEAVE food and drink outside of classroom.

• LOCATE missed assignments due to being absent or on field trip.

• USE cell phones/ipods during designated times.

• USE hall pass (4 per trimester) to leave the class room.

Keys to Success

• Do all the assignments yourself. Getting help from parents, another student, or me is fine, but NEVER copy someone else’s work.

• Always copy the problem before working it.

• Always show your work. Turning in a list of answers is not acceptable.

• Write down notes that are beneficial to you.

• Make sure to understand the material. If you don’t understand, ask me to please explain again.

• Be confident in your ability to do problems without a model. You may need a model for the first few problems, but try to get beyond the need for a model quickly.

• Increase your confidence for a test by practicing problems that will be covered. Being prepared means that you can complete the problems without a model. There will be no model on the test.

• Stay organized! The more notes you have the better. Also, the final exam is cumulative so you will need your work throughout the trimester to prepare.

• Pay close attention to details. In mathematics you must learn to pay attention to every letter, minus sign, and parentheses.

• Stay focused. Do not be misled by students around you who may be making poor choices.

• Think positively! You can learn and do math! It is possible!

Classroom Behavior

• Abide by all school rules and regulations outlined in the Anderson County High School Code of Conduct.

• Be courteous and respectful to everyone. Rudeness will not be tolerated. Remember, rudeness is how your words or actions make others feel, not what you meant.

• No swearing or name-calling.

• Follow directions the first time they are given.

• Put forth your best effort in all class activities.

• Maintain the highest level of integrity and honesty in your work. CHEATING WILL NOT be tolerated.

• Ask for help when needed!
