Global Perspectives A Summer Assignment, 2019-2020Please prepare the following four components to be handed in on the first day of school. Each will be individual grades. Email or text with questions!Component 1: PortfolioPlease prepare a folder, both hardcopy and digital (google drive) with the following:Resume2 Letters of recommendation from teachers, employers, or mentorsACT Score ReportsCopies of family financial information for the FAFSACopies of papers or projects that have been influential to your academic careerAS Global paper, presentation slides, reflective papersReflections on work experiences, internships, or job shadowsComponent 2: College ResearchPlease research three different colleges you want to attend: one “reach” or dream school, one mid- range/probable acceptance school, and one safety school. Complete the attached handout for each college. Bring two copies, one set to be handed in separately, and one set to put in your portfolio. Component 3: College EssayDrafting college essays during this summer is so important. For this class, along with you’re A Language class, you’ll be given the chance to draft multiple essays. You will undergo multiple writing workshops in both classes. The prompts for Language will be centered on a personal statement and prompts from the Common App. For A-Global, please choose from the options below paying careful attention to what is required. Both can be written in first person as these are personal essays. Not included in the options below, but consider what major theme will be foundation in all of your applications (i.e, being a female engineer, having a commitment to community service, etc)Choose one of the following:1. The word floccinaucinihilipilification is the act or habit of describing or regarding something as unimportant or of having no value. It originated in the mid-18th century from the Latin words "floccus," "naucum," "nihilum," and "pilus"—all words meaning?“of little use.” Coin your own word using parts from any language you choose, tell us its meaning, and describe the plausible (if only to you) scenarios in which it would be most appropriately used.2. “Don’t play what’s there, play what’s not there.“—Miles Davis (1926–91)3. Chicago author Nelson Algren said, “A writer does well if in his whole life he can tell the story of one street.” Chicagoans, but not just Chicagoans, have always found something instructive, and pleasing, and profound in the stories of their block, of Main Street, of Highway 61, of a farm lane, of the Celestial Highway. Tell us the story of a street, path, road—real or imagined or metaphorical.4. People often think of language as a connector, something that brings people together by helping them share experiences, feelings, ideas, etc. We, however, are interested in how language sets people apart. Start with the peculiarities of your own personal language—the voice you use when speaking most intimately to yourself, the vocabulary that spills out when you’re startled, or special phrases and gestures that no one else seems to use or even understand—and tell us how your language makes you unique. You may want to think about subtle riffs or idiosyncrasies based on cadence, rhythm, rhyme, or (mis)pronunciation.Or any of the other supplemental essays from UChicago’s website. That’s where these four came from, and they’re the most creative I’ve plete the following:As a Cambridge student, you have participated in a holistic diploma program. The one course that is required is AS Global Perspectives. Please describe, in roughly 500 words, how that course has shaped your thinking in both a global and local sense. Component 4: Initial Paper 4 ResearchAs you know, this course is centered on Paper 4, also known as the Cambridge Research Report. Begin thinking about possible topic options in a field of study you are interested in. It does not have to be a “global issue” or “local problem.” To see student examples, a FL teacher’s website lists a few here. For your initial research, come with three books you find relevant to your study. Reading them is of course implied. They must be books, not articles or other short texts. Be prepared to dialogue about your topic on the first day, and have them as hard copies to pass around as you share. Be prepared to discuss why you’re interested in the topic, what you gleaned from your books and initial research, how you see your research moving forward, and what questions will serve as drivers for you throughout the year.College Research Notes 1Name_________________________Institution: ___________________________________________________________________Check if this is your □ Dream School □ Mid- Range School □ Safety SchoolFind the school’s Common Data Set. 1.
