Active vs

Active vs. Passive Verbs

(apply only to action verbs; not linking)

Verbs are active when the subject does the action

Verbs are passive when the subject receives the action

Examples:

Diego hit the ball. (Diego is doing the action of hitting the ball.)

Diego is the subject! He’s active!

The ball was hit by Diego. (The ball is receiving the action of being hit.)

The ball is the subject! It is passive!
