0000 Language Arts Mr. Kyle / Hkyle@ Course Description: The purpose of this course is to provide 6th grade students with a foundation of language and literature so that they are prepared for higher learning and career readiness. We will use texts of high complexity and advanced integrated language arts study in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language.Grading Scale:Class Work35%Tests25%Achieve 3000/TeenBiz15%Quizzes15%Home Work10%Achieve 3000 Grading Plan: Throughout the week, you will use Achieve 3000/TeenBiz to complete Reading Lessons. Every student gets the same basic lesson, but the content is customized to match each student’s own reading level (Lexile). The lesson comes with a variety of fun activities to improve your comprehension, vocabulary and writing skills. As your reading level improves, Achieve 3000 will increase the level of difficulty (Lexile) so you remain challenged and interested. Doing your best on the activities will ensure the greatest match between your ability and the content delivered. It is also important that your answers to the questions reflect work completed independently and without extra assistance. These are assigned weekly. Students must complete 6 articles/month in order for the program to be utilized to its full potential. These are assigned each Monday. Preferably, these should be completed prior to the weekend, however, I will accept them up until Sunday. I will post the article for the week on the homework site. If for some reason I forget, it is also written on the board in the Homework spot as well as emailed out to your child on their own account via the Teen Biz website. The article should take approximately 20 minutes to complete. I have two computers in the room. I make every effort to have students complete them in spare time. If your child needs to come to me in the morning or after school to complete an article, I am happy to allow them to do so. Students should make arrangements with me ahead of time to do so. Also, the program works on cellphones and tablets. There is no excuse to not have these completed timely.Homework Policy: Homework is assigned on a regular basis. It is the student’s responsibility to copy the homework when assigned from the board into assignment section of their binder. The teacher will also post the homework on the school website. Most homework WILL NOT be accepted late (unless due to an absence). The reason being that we check homework together in class. I cannot give a child credit for work they didn’t do. If the homework is an assignment that isn’t corrected in class together, then homework will be given half credit if it is turned in late. Excused absences will follow school policy Class Rules: The Somerset Canyons Handbook and the rules and procedures contained within will be enforced in my classroom. “Sharpies” or permanent markers are not permitted. Additionally, students will be expected to:? Be Prompt ? Be Prepared ? Be Productive ? Be Positive ? Be Respectful Consequences/Discipline Plan: Failure to comply with classroom and/or school rules and procedures may result in the following: Verbal Warning > Parent Contact > Detention > Referral. Please understand that your child is responsible for their behavior and actions. I make every effort to deal with the student first. Sometimes a lunch detention may be issued for minor infractions. These are used as a right away consequence. I am not quick to contact a parent unless it is something I feel warrants contact or is escalating quickly.Cell Phones: Students are not permitted to use cell phones during instruction. Cell phones should stay in the student’s backpack or in the assigned pocket on the wall. If the student is caught with a cell phone during class, it will be collected and kept and returned before the end of the class period. This procedure is to ensure that all students are actively participating in the learning environment. If you need to get a hold of your child, please email the teacher or call the school. Consequences for Unauthorized Cell Phone Usage: Consequences are put in place if a student is caught using it (checking the time, texting, checking a message, taking a picture, looking at yourself on the screen etc.):Phone confiscated and returned at the end of the periodPhone confiscated and parent must pick up in the front officePhone confiscated, parent must pick up in the front office, after school detention issued.Phone confiscated, parent must pick up in the front office, referral issued to administration.Incentives: Based on model student behavior and academics, rewards will be spontaneous and at the teacher’s discretion.Cheating/Plagiarism: Plagiarism will not be tolerated under any circumstances.?Plagiarism is using another’s work and claiming it as your own. The teacher will help the student gather the missing work and schedule any make up tests/quizzes that might have been missed – mornings (7:00-7:55). (If the student knows in advance of an absence, the student should notify the teacher, although this does not guarantee the student will receive the work prior to the absence.) If the absence is excused, students are allowed 2 days for every day missed to turn in work. It will not be counted late. If the absence is unexcused, students will still be allowed 2 days for every missed day to make up the work, however, it may be marked late.Home Communication: As necessary, I will communicate with parents/guardians to update on grades, behavior, or other necessary information. Please feel free to communicate with me as needed. Please try to have students communicate with me first. We are trying to encourage students to advocate for themselves. Student/Teacher Communication: I urge students to communicate with me about any special requests they have (including late assignments, absences, seating needs, etc.) so that I can accommodate them. I want this to be a very successful year for all. You will find that I am very communicative and will make every effort in helping to ensure my students are successful. I am not a mind reader, and although I am intuitive to student needs, I have not obtained that super power, yet!**A copy of this syllabus should remain in the student’s folder at all times.Somerset Canyons Academy Middle School 2020-2021PARENT CONTACT SHEETRETURN THIS PAGE ONLY TO MRS.
