When Movie Sex Was Art

Richard Corliss

T

hree film actresses recently died within a day of one another: Maria Schneider, 58, on Feb. 3 and Lena Nyman, 66, and Tura Satana, 72 (or 75, __________ [0]), on Feb. 4. Each actress is known for a single movie, __________ (1)—Satana’s in Russ Meyer’s 1965 Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!, Nyman’s in Vilgot Sjoman’s 1967 I Am Curious (Yellow) and Schneider’s in Bernardo Bertolucci’s 1972 Last Tango in Paris—stand today as monuments to film history’s wildest, most adventurous period. When everything suddenly could be said and shown and the “adult film” label __________ (2) with a smirk attached, these actresses gave face and form to the bold, sexually liberated woman.

Satana, born Tura Luna Pascual Yamaguchi in Hokkaido, Japan, arrived with her family in California, __________ (3) during World War II. Working as an exotic dancer when Meyer cast her in Pussycat!, Satana __________ (4) as Varla, the leader of a stripper race-car gang. One guy fights her and gets his spine snapped; another calls her “too much for one man to handle”. Her face a Kabuki mask of predatory sensuality, her voice clipped and brassy, her figure a series of dangerous curves, Satana sent out blowtorch star sparks. But she never got another decent (or even suitably indecent) film role.

Nyman enjoyed a 50-year career in Swedish movies and theater, but her notoriety sprang from I Am Curious (Yellow), __________ (5) until the courts ruled it could be shown. The avid flocked to art houses, and Curious became a scandalous hit. A docu-portrait of Sweden, with the director and his star more or less playing themselves, the film contains scenes of Nyman and one of her lovers (Borje Ahlstedt) in explicit but simulated sex. Today the movie is worth watching for the fond, then-edgy relationship between Sjoman and Nyman—a wry fable __________ (6) that begin in erotic heat and end in who’s-using-whom rancor.

Satana and Nyman were acting with unknowns; Schneider’s co-star was Marlon Brando, fresh from The Godfather. The story of two strangers, Jeanne and Paul, who meet in a Paris flat and have a torrid affair __________ (7), Last Tango strips its actors bare (Brando metaphorically) for sexual and verbal truth games. Famed for a scene in which Paul uses butter as a lubricant while sodomizing Jeanne, the film stoked sensation upon its release and outrage __________ (8). Schneider felt unfairly pegged as a sex performer __________ (9) and fell into a long period of drug addiction. She never regained her éclat.

In movies, though, a single indelible role can last a lifetime and beyond. On screen, this trio will forever radiate challenge and allure.
