What Not to Put in a Resume

The following information should not be put on the resume itself:

1. Names and addresses of references

The names and addresses of references should be listed on a separate piece of paper. They can be provided at the interview or in an interview follow-up letter as requested.

2. Salary

Salary should be discussed during the interview process itself since you do not want to undersell yourself ahead of time or price yourself out of a job market with which you may be unfamiliar.

3. Your reasons, if any, for changing jobs

It is best to discuss this matter with the interviewer and only if you are asked. It’s better not to commit yourself on paper. At least during the interview, you can provide the necessary background and context.

4. Your reasons for present unemployment, if applicable

This topic is also best dealt with in person or in a telephone conversation.

5. Photograph

While a photo may seem like a good idea, it may work against you depending on the subjectivity of the person evaluating your application. It is illegal for a prospective employer to request a photo of a job candidate. What Not to Put in a Resume

Resume Cover Letter

It is common to send a cover letter along with a resume when seeking a job or position. Such a letter is a concrete indication of your verbal communication skills as well as your general personality and intelligence. Therefore, it is extremely important that this cover letter be well written and professional in appearance. A well written cover letter can achieve several purposes not achieved by the resume alone. The cover letter:

1. Introduces you and your credentials to the prospective employer

2. Articulates reasons for your interest in the organization and position

3. Lets the employer know exactly which position you are interested in

4. Functions as a sales letter that tells why you are particularly qualified for that specific position

5. Establishes a more personal connection with a perspective employer in a way the resume cannot

6. Provides a glimpse of your unique personality and other information tat makes you stand out from the other candidates

7. Stimulates interest in meeting you for a personal interview

Ms. Anne-Marie Priestly

Office Manager

Midwest Health Clinic

56 Main St.

Hadley, MI 49709

Dear Ms. Priestly,

I am sending my resume in response to your ad for an acupuncturist that appeared in the June issue of Acupuncture Today.

I am a Licensed Acupuncturist in the State of Michigan, an NCCAOM Diplomate in Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs, and a Certified Massage Therapist. I have been working in the realm of complementary and alternative health for 18 years, the past 10 of which I have owned an operated my own acupuncture clinic in Grand Rapids.

However, I am currently looking to expand my experience by working within a multidisciplinary medical clinic. Over the years, I have heard many good things about the Midwest Health Clinic, and I believe that my training and experience would be useful in your medical office. I look forward to meeting with you to learn more about this position. I will call you next week to follow up.

Sincerely,

Joan Bramwell Stoker, Lic. Ac.
