Identify how to avoid using drugs. Behavior change: Students will be able to identify the differences between, healthy, unhealthy and behaviors. Students will know how to react if they are faced with a healthy or unhealthy situation and what resources they have readily available to get help. Learning Objectives (Lesson Specific):Students will be able to understand the effects that drugs, specifically hallucinogens, have on a person’s life, mind and body. Students will discuss these different components and reflect on how drugs may impact their life. Through completing the activities students will demonstrate their ability to access valid information through both the internet and their text books. They will work together as a group to accumulate all of the information needed to complete the worksheet.Assessments (informal):Students will work in groups to discuss questions on the worksheet. Class discussion will also be used as a way to assess how well key concepts were picked up by the students. This will be reinforced with the summary and conclusion section of the lesson. Previous learning experiences and skills: The kids will have learned about alcohol and tobacco in their prior experience in health 1, but have not received in depth information on drugs.Strategies for diverse learners (differentiation):I will walk around the room to give help to groups and individual students who may be struggling with material. For the students who have a quality grasp of the material I will push them to explore topics further and ask thought provoking questions. I will also pay attention to IEP’s to ensure that the requirements for all students are met. I will seat students who may struggle in the classroom closer towards the front of the room to ensure that they are able to hear the directions clearly. Demonstrations and visuals will also be used to give a clear description. Instructional resources and materials: Text books – GlencoeLaptop computers- internet Worksheets on hallucinogens Introduction/motivator:Students will discuss how the material on drugs is relevant to their lives to make the topic more meaningful and in turn lead towards motivation to learn. Activity Worksheet:Name:Hallucinogen WorksheetGroup topic:This worksheet will be completed by each individual in the class and will be turned in for points. In order to receive full credit the worksheets will have to provide sources for each piece of information written down. The source will consist of a URL from a webpage, or a page number in the Glencoe health text book. Each question should include a citation. This unit we will be discussing the different types of drugs:HallucinogensDepressants Opiates Stimulants Today we will be focusing on Hallucinogens- Does anyone know what a Hallucinogen drug is? Maybe some examples of drugs? Activity- I want everyone to watch this video and write down on a sheet of paper three things that you learned or were surprised by. at the 4:54 markDiscussion - how might this drug affect a person’s life financially? (costs money and lots of it) Socially? (The person interviewed was scared of his friend who was using) Mentally? ( seen to have changed a person into acting unlike who they truly are)Student taught Activity- worksheet will be handed outStudents will break off into 4 groups. Each group will be assigned a set topic that they will research through the internet or their Glencoe Text and then fill out their portion of the handout. The groups are: Examples of Hallucinogens and how they are used (injection, inhaled, pill form etc.), effects of hallucinogens on the body, mind and life, why people may might choose to use drugs or hallucinogens– must relate to the drugs specific effects. After ten minutes, students will have group members disperse amongst the three groups so that there is a representative from each group in the new groups. The students will then teach the group the information they found in order to help their group fill out the rest of the worksheet. Group members will take turns sharing their informationClosure- How do Hallucinogens affect the body?- dilated pupils, memory loss, increase heart rate & blood pressure, anxiety, paranoia, speech, muscle coordination, senses of touch and pain are dulled, seeing things and out of body experiencesHow can they be taken?- Pill, liquid, powder, injected, oral, sniffed or smoked.Why might they be used?- To space out, to dull physical or emotional pain.
