Project/Abstract of Tasks:

Middle school students will use the OP1, OP2, STO, RCL, and FIX keys on a TI Explorer Plus calculator to find the sum of a food order including sales tax and gratuity.

Learning Strategies:

I. Introduction: Review briefly the major functions of the Explorer Plus calculator with the class. Teacher should use overhead calculator for this review.

II. Activity:

2. Estimate the total bill before calculating with the calculator.

3. Using the OP1, OP2, STO, RCL, and FIX keys on the calculator, students will find the total restaurant bill when given a menu of items, percent of sales tax and percent for gratuity /tip.

(See the "Student Activity" handout.)

4. Compare estimate to actual answer.

III. Sharing:

After completion of the activity, the class will discuss their answers and the advantages and disadvantages of using the Explorer Plus calculator for this type of activity.
