Evidence 2:Describe the evidence. This second piece of evidence includes a sense of differentiating within the classroom. Rocket Math is completed daily before the math lesson begins. It’s focus is to practice addition math facts, practicing for two minutes, then timed test for one minute. Each student is placed on their “just right” start level based on their number fluency test. The number fluency test examines the rate at which you can write whole numbers. Once each student has their appropriate level, they begin their Rocket Math chart. Each student has a personal goal to obtain of how many problems they can answer right within a minute. Once their goal is met they proceed to the next level. As the levels progress, they get harder and harder making the students master the basic addition math facts. Explain how the evidence demonstrates your proficiency of the standard, including the elements within the standard. Rocket Math is a fun and great way to differentiate. Each student is able to practice their math facts at their own pace. The more levels completed does not mean the better a math student. Each personal goal is set which determines the ability to move onto the next level. One student could have progressed throughout several levels, but their goal is to complete 20 out of 60 math problems in a minute, where another student may have only completed a couple of levels but their goal is to complete 48 out of 60 math problems in a minute. The program is a wonderful way to “level the playing field” for all students, giving them a chance to practice their math facts relating to element D, “Teachers adapt their teaching for the benefit of all students, including those with special needs across a range of ability levels” (CO Teacher Quality Standards). Along with several other parent-teacher communicating tools, Rocket Math is a way for parents to track their student’s math practice by receiving their completed rockets and timed tests. Element E, “Teachers provide proactive, clear and constructive feedback to families about student progress and work collaboratively with the families and significant adults in the lives of their students” (CO Teacher Quality Standards) is a direct reference to this practice. The parents are able to practice these facts along with their child for homework, timing them and staying consistent to the routine at school. Reflect on what you have learned from the experiences related to this evidence and how you will improve your practices as a result of the experiences. Rocket Math is a new program to me. I was hesitant at first, understanding the struggle and stress that timed testing can bring to children, but after observing the process myself, I fell in love with what the students were able to take away from it. Due to the fact it is all created off of each individual goal, the students do not compare themselves to each other, looking at who has more levels completed. They program allows everyone to go at their own pace, but still receive the same information. I will continue to use Rocket Math throughout my career because it does create an inclusive learning environment for all learners. ................
