Notes for Teachers on Trimester 3 Science Grade 6 and 7 ExamsThe purpose of this document is to illustrate the layout of the new examinations for Grade 6 and 7. This may be complemented by further subject-specific guidance provided by the Curriculum anization of the examAs you know, the science papers are in English only but a separate English-Arabic A4 glossary sheet will be available if required by the students. The presentation of the papers will be similar to previous years (on portal in “Assessment Related Documents”) from the point of view of students. For example, it will still look like a test/exam. Questions will require students to label and complete diagrams, complete tables and graphs, and match pictures and words. Questions requiring extended responses will have lines or spaces provided. The exam will last 90 minutes. There are six questions broken down into parts (a, b, c … and i, ii, iii …).Description of the mark schemeThere are no “mark” allocations but instead a place for teachers to judge the level of achievement (N, E, D or M).Some questions have been designed to determine the level of achievement (E, D or M) for one specific learning outcome or, occasionally, more than one learning outcome. Some questions are able to differentiate performance across all levels and some only one or two, e.g. N or E; N or E or D. Please use the mark scheme carefully.Teachers who mark the questions should circle the appropriate level of achievement based on the student’s response. A lack of response must be judged as “N”.Further question-specific guidance and details how to mark student responses will be provided in the mark schemes for each subject. These will be posted on the portal approximately 15 minutes after each paper is completed.Tips for using previous exams on the portalPage 4 shows an exemplar with two questions. The actual questions, learning outcomes and levels are there for illustration purposes only. A Grade 6 past paper can be found on the portal in:Curriculum & Assessment > Assessment Related Documents > Old T3 Exam Papers > Sciences 2014 Exemplar exams for Grade 6 and Grade 7 will also be placed on the portal. To prepare students for these exams, teachers could design further questions on Trimester 3 learning outcomes in a similar format.Test-taking strategiesSome terminology will be used in the exam that students may not be familiar with from their everyday learning. Teachers should familiarize their students with these words prior to the exam. They will also be contained in the glossary.LabelMatchExplainStateChooseIdentifyDescribeCompleteSuggestTickCirclePredictIt is important that the teacher prepares their students for the Trimester 3 exam. Providing students with an entire practice paper in one go is less effective. A number of other strategies could be used such as:Giving the students a ‘mock’ exam to experience concentrating for an extended period of time and giving tips on how to cope with thisTeaching exam strategies such as how to answer multiple choice questions or selecting information from the questionBreaking down a whole exam into different topics in class and concentrating on each topic at a timeGiving questions related to the current topic as starters or plenariesUsing stations where students attempt questions in teams as they move around the roomDeveloping quizzes and games relating to exam-style questionsUsing strategies for discussion such as think, pair, share and concept cartoonsAsking students to make up their own exam questionsUsing a glossaryContent specific adviceThe Trimester 3 Exam Specification will be made available on the portal:Curriculum & Assessment > Assessment Related Documents > T3 2015 Exam SpecificationsThe exam will cover the learning outcomes from Trimester 3 of the Scope and Sequence:Science > Shared Documents > Academic year 2014-2015 > Cycle 2 > Grade 6 > 1_Curriculum Scope and SequenceSome Investigating Scientifically learning outcomes will also be assessed. For Grade 6 these are:S3Identify the variables to change, measure and keep the sameS4Select suitable equipment for carrying out an investigationS9Draw simple bar charts and begin to draw line graphsS10Identify, describe and begin to interpret patterns in dataS11Draw conclusions from patterns in data related to scientific knowledge and understandingFor Grade 7 these are:S1Construct a scientific question to investigate and predict the outcomeS3Identify the variables to change, measure and keep the sameS4Select suitable equipment for carrying out an investigationS8Record observations/data in a simple tableS9Draw simple bar charts and begin to draw line graphsS10Identify, describe and begin to interpret patterns in dataS11Draw conclusions from patterns in data related to scientific knowledge and understandingFurther communications to all teachers concerning exams (schedules, marking, where to find mark schemes, etc) will be made nearer the time either directly from School Operations to Principals or via our assessment email (P-12assessment@adec.ac.ae). All subject-specific questions should be directed to the relevant P-12 curriculum HQ specialist.Example of inside pages:Intermediate levels are not permitted, i.e. if the responses are N or M then E or D cannot be awarded.424815010604500Teachers should circle the level for the student response. The learning outcome is required for back page (some questions assess two outcomes)1.Two students are creating a presentation about energy resources.(a) Identify four examples of energy resources from the presentation.62026801911356P5NE006P5NE……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………2.
