Mrs. SherrellEnglish 1-4Hi Everybody! This week we will continue and conclude our Poetry unit. I hope you enjoyed both our rhyming poem by Robert Frost, and also the free verse poem by Naomi Shihab Nye. If you have not had a chance to read/hear these poems, please check out my reading video on my Poetry padlet which can be found here: There are also some excellent spoken word videos on this Padlet that I would love you to watch if you have the capabilities. Normally I would show these in class, but things are not quite normal right now :/Also, if you can, check out my website for more information: mrssherrell. For this assignment, you are going to write your own Free Verse poem titled “Where I’m From”, but don’t panic….there is a template! For the 1st part of this exercise, use the template to create your poem by following the instructions/description under each line. If you’ve ever done Mad Libs, it is a lot like that. I’ve included some notes below to help. Once you have finished the template, write a final draft of your poem on a separate sheet of paper. You can handwrite it or type it. I have included the original “Where I’m From” poem, as well as a model poem which I wrote myself. Don’t worry about being perfect, just have fun and do your best. You can return your final draft/finished poem to me in the packet, or you can email it or upload it through remind. Email: ksherrell@Remind: Helpful Notes:An Adjective is descriptive word, it describes a noun (person, place, or thing). Some examples are: Tall, fast, friendly, intelligent, comfortable. A product name is the brand name. For instance, Nike is the product name of a line of athletic wear. A sensory detail is a detail that would appeal to one of the five senses. “Smells like apple pie” is a sensory detail. Tradition: Something you do because it’s always been done. Hunting eggs at Easter for instance. Trait: a quality or characteristic that something is known for. A physical trait would be having blue eyes. A character trait might be a great sense of humor, or being a gossipy. Ancestry or line: Your people, either you family name or ethnicity. You could come from a long line of Smiths, or be a proud member of the Navajos.
