Undergraduate Studies/Bachelor of General Studies (BGS)Name of Department: Undergraduate StudiesName of Supervisor: Beth Taylor, belie@usf.eduTitle of Position: Undergraduate Studies Academic Programs Graduate AssistantSummary of Position: The position of Graduate Assistant for BGS offers a new graduate student the opportunity to assist prospective, nontraditional students’ admission to the university and earn their first bachelor degree in the Bachelor of General Studies major, a degree completion program for returning adult students. There will be direct contact with undergraduate students through one-on-one advising, outreach, and intake processing. This is an excellent opportunity for a future student affairs professional to gain experience in comprehensive advising and admissions practices. This position advises students concerning their academic plans, progression toward degree, class schedule, and choice of concentration, career goals, and other academic activities to assist the student in making decisions concerning personal and educational goals leading to graduation. A successful candidate will possess an understanding of how students benefit from an appreciative / developmental advising approach and will exhibit a high ethic of care and desire for student success.? In addition, this assistantship will provide opportunities to collaborate with other academic advisors and departments within Student Services. This position is highly administrative and will consist of office work using a computer during the entire shift. Technological skills are must. General Studies advising works with Advisors, career services, major reselection, Academic Advocacy and the Academic Regulations Committee and offers 14 concentration options for adult learners who are experienced employees and aren’t able to seek promotion opportunities within the work place due to a lack of education credentials. Preferred BGS students will have earned 60 or more credits, have a gap in education of 3 to 5 years, have work experience and have set, specific career goals. BGS Duties/Responsibilities Provide basic advising for new students in relation to concentrations and other university requirements.Manage admissions process of new, prospective and former BGS students using excel. BGS admissions of new students and advising/recruiting prospective students into the degree program. This includes assistance with USF admission processes and overlaps with academic advising.Assist in the creation of academic plans for students enrolled in the BGS program.Utilize Microsoft excel to manage all new admits by term.Utilize Microsoft Outlook to manage student inquires via general mailbox.Utilize Qualtrics to manage new student applications/application processes.Utilize Banner for student information and imaging/municate with advising staff in concentration areas/departments.Utilize Student Information System to upload student applications for review by BGS committee/Program Manager.Manage orientation, present and interact with students during orientation sessions. Retrieve data, conduct assessment and compile reports for a variety of purposes including Academic Probation intervention and follow-up efforts.Collaborate with university academic advisors for appropriate student referrals to BGS.Develop event planning and presentation skills by coordinating BGS Degree Works group advising for new admits each semester.Develop and provide marketing of BGS advising services and scholarship opportunities.Attend events to promote program as needed.Assist Assistant Director and Bachelor of Science Applied Science (BSAS) advisor as needed. Expected Learning OutcomesObtain experience in academic advising for returning non-traditional adult student populations. Expand educational opportunities for adult learners.Develop an understanding of Adult Education/Learning theory.Ability to navigate student information systems in a higher education setting.Understand and evaluate policies related to higher education policy.Navigate facilitating assistance for students with special academic situations.Expand knowledge of professional Academic Advising practices.Create a collaborative network for student referrals with Student Affairs and Academic Affairs.Obtain program/project management /program development experience.Obtain experience in working with a team of professional staff, fellow GA’s and student workers in a fast-paced environment that serves a diverse student population.Understand issues related to transfer students (transfer shock) and support students in navigating and adapting to the University experience.Additional InformationAverage Number of Hours per Week: 20 hours/week (M 9-5, W 9-4:30, F 9-4:30 with 1 hour lunch)Minimum QualificationsMust be an admitted USF graduate student (Masters) in good academic standing. Students pursuing degrees in Adult, Career, Higher Education, Statistics and Measurement, College Student Affairs, Psychology, Sociology or a related degree are highly encouraged to apply. A Bachelor's Degree?with 2 years of relevant experience in a university setting.?Excellent written and verbal skills. Preferred Qualifications: ??Advanced computer skills (Excel) and knowledge of USF campus. Documented experience and success working with non-traditional adult learners and at risk students.
