Course Description: Advanced Algebra with Trigonometry is a course designed to meet the needs of each individual student in their preparation for the ACT exam, PARCC assessment, and post-secondary work. Topics will include, but not be limited to, functions, linear equations and inequalities, quadratic equations and inequalities, logarithms, probability and statistics, number sense, graphical representations, measurement, and properties of plane figures, including trigonometry. Lessons will be designed to guide students through mastery of the College Readiness Standards, a framework for which the ACT exam and most college entrance exams is based upon as well as the skills outlined in the Common Core State Standards necessary for success on the PARCC assessment.

Attendance: Attendance is critical to every student’s success. Although there is no direct impact on a student’s grade due to class absences, students will notice that excessive absences will cause them to fall behind in learning the required course material. This will impact assessment grades negatively. Students who are tardy to class will be responsible for making up the material they miss and will be held to the same deadline as the rest of the class. No extended time will be offered.

Homework: Students will be assigned homework on a nightly basis. Homework is intended to prepare students for future class sessions and reinforce previously learned material. This is a time for students to practice. Completion of homework assignments will not be considered in the calculation of the final grade.

Career Portfolio: The career portfolio is collected once per semester and is assigned a collaborative grade used in all classes. This grade will be entered as a Skills Check.

Grading Scale: The standard school wide grading scale will be used to determine the final grade:

A-100-90%

B-89-80%

C-79-70%

D-69-60%

F-59% and below

Assessments: Assessments will be given often throughout the semester. 80% of the final grade will be based on Skill Checks, Unit Exams, Quarter Exams, and Project Grades. Skill Checks will count for one assessment grade. Unit Exams will count for a double assessment grade. Projects Grades will be determined based on the complexity of the project. Skills Checks will be administered about once per week and Unit Exams will be administered about once every four weeks. Quarter grades will count for double test grades. 20% of the final grade will be based on the Final Exam. The final exam will consist of multiple parts and may be given over several days.

Makeup Policy: Any student who is given an opportunity to complete a makeup assessment must arrange a time to do so. Students who miss an assessment due to an excused absence have a deadline equal to the number of days they were absent. Students who miss an assessment due to a suspension must makeup the assessment the day they return to class. Students who miss an assessment due to a school function must make arrangements to complete the makeup prior to missing the class. Students who miss an assessment due to an unexcused absence will not be offered the opportunity to makeup the assessment. Deadlines for projects will be firm; no exceptions will be made for any reason. Makeup exams will not be offered for quarter exams or the final exam.

Retake Policy: Students will be offered the opportunity to complete two retake exams for any Skills Check or Unit Exam. Retakes must be completed within two weeks of the completion of the unit that corresponds to that exam. If a student opts to complete a retake, they must first complete all assigned homework for that section and must correct mistakes made on the original assessment. If a student opts to complete a second retake, they must correct the mistakes made on the first retake and attend a minimum of a 1 hour tutoring session. Students are encouraged to take retake exams as soon as possible after the original test. Retakes will not be offered for projects, quarter exams, or the final exam.

Parent Involvement: Parents are encouraged to take an active role in their child’s education by utilizing information posted on the school website to ensure their child is practicing the material presented in class. Parents are encouraged to regularly check the parent portal, as grades will be updated regularly. Please encourage your child to complete homework on a regular basis and complete retakes as necessary. Parents should feel free to email me directly via the email address in this Syllabus or via the Parent Portal System with any concerns you may have.

Cell Phone Policy: Students will not be allowed to use their cell phone for personal use during class. If a phone rings or is seen during class it will be confiscated and brought to the main office where it will be held for parent pickup.

Hallway Passes: Per the school policy, passes will only be issued on an emergency basis and must be written in the student’s planner.

Class Supply List: The following items should be brought to class on a daily basis:

• Loose-Leaf Paper

• 2” Three Ring Binder with dividers

• Pencils, Red Pen, Colored Pencils

• Calculator: TI-83, TI-84, or TI-Nspire (non-CAS version)
