School Website:

Course Description: Geometry is a course designed to meet the needs of each individual student in their preparation for the PSAT, and SAT exam, and post-secondary work. Topics will include, but not be limited to Introduction to Geometry, Congruence, Similarity, Right Triangles, Trigonometry, Circles, Expressing Geometric properties with equations, Geometric Measurements and Dimensions, and Modeling with Geometry. Lessons will be designed to guide students through mastery of the skills outlined in the Common Core State Standards necessary for success on the PSAT and SAT assessments.

Supplemental Resources: school website, MARS Performance Tasks, FALs, geometry textbook, etc.

Attendance: Attendance is critical to every student’s success. Although there is no direct impact on a student’s grade due to class absences, students will notice that excessive absences will cause them to fall behind in learning the required course material. This will impact assessment grades negatively. Students who are tardy to class will be responsible for making up the material they miss and will be held to the same deadline as the rest of the class. No extended time will be offered.

Participation: Students will be asked to participate in mathematical performance tasks individually or in group settings daily. Participation prepares students to work efficiently in a team effort and to prepare for discovery and mathematical thinking.

Guided Practice and Assignments: Students will be assigned guided practice or assignments in class and will have homework when assignments need to be completed for the next day. Guided Practice and Assignments are intended to prepare students for future class sessions and reinforce previously learned material. This is a time for students to practice. Completion of Guided Practice is 35% will be considered in the calculation of the final grade. (Honor Level students will not be able to turn in late assignments and will be required to do a STEM Project and do peer tutoring.)

Career Portfolio: The career portfolio is collected once per semester and is assigned a collaborative grade used in all classes. The category CHSAS requirement will be 10% of the overall grade.

Assessments: Assessments will be given often throughout the semester. 40% of the final grade will be based on Tests and Project Grades. Tests will count for one assessment grade. Tests will have teacher feed-back first. Students will be able to take feed-back and make corrections with explanations then a grade will be finalized.

Unit Exams will count for a double assessment grade. Projects Grades will be determined based on the complexity of the project. Quarter grades will count for double test grades.

Final Exam: 15% of the final grade will be based on the Final Exam. The final exam will consist of multiple parts and may be given over several days.

Grading Scale: The standard school wide grading scale will be used to determine the final grade:

A-100-90% B-89-80% C-79-70% D-69-60% F-59% and below

Makeup Policy: Any student who is given an opportunity to complete a makeup assessment must arrange a time to do so. Students who miss an assessment due to an excused absence have a deadline equal to the number of days they were absent. Students who miss an assessment due to a suspension must makeup the assessment the day they return to class. Students who miss an assessment due to a school function must make arrangements to complete the makeup prior to missing the class. Students who miss an assessment due to an unexcused absence will not be offered the opportunity to makeup the assessment. Deadlines for projects will be firm; no exceptions will be made for any reason. Makeup exams will not be offered for quarter exams or the final exam.

Parent Involvement: Parents are encouraged to take an active role in their child’s education by utilizing information posted on the school website to ensure their child is practicing the material presented in class. Parents are encouraged to regularly check the parent portal, as grades will be updated regularly. Please encourage your child to complete homework on a regular basis and work on teacher feed-back on tests. Parents should feel free to email me directly via the email address in this Syllabus with any concerns you may have.

Cell Phone Policy: Students will not be allowed to use their cell phone for personal use during class. If a phone rings or is seen during class it will be confiscated and brought to the main office where it will be held for parent pickup.
