Originally, the Boston terrier was a cross between an Olde English Bulldog and the now extinct White English Terrier. French Bulldogs are also believed to have been used in the creation of the breed. They have been nicknamed the “American Gentleman” because of their easy-going temperaments and the standard tuxedo markings. Although black and white is the most common color combination found on Boston Terriers, other coat colors can be traced back to original breeding stock. Hooper’s Judge, the first Boston Terrier on record, was actually brindle and white. Red and seal Boston Terriers can trace their color back to these ancestors. Boston Terriers with splash coats can also trace their pattern back to original stock. This coat pattern is still common in English and French Bulldogs today.The BulldogRegardless of their name, Boston Terriers are a bulldog breed. This background makes it extremely important when it comes to food choices. Without a no soy/corn/wheat food, your puppy may experience digestive issues or allergies. If you have an issue with fleas before six months, Dawn Dish Soap will work well. I recommend Advantage Spot Treatment if you have flea issues once your puppy gets older. Fixing Your PuppyIt is in the best interest for a dog to get fixed if they are not going to be used for breeding! It is extremely important that you wait at least eight months to spay or neuter your puppy. It is ideal that you wait until your puppy is a year old. The sex hormones released by the reproductive organs regulate bone growth. If these hormones are removed too early, it can lead to bones growing abnormally. Possible issues caused by early spay or neuter can include Hip Dysplasia, Osteosarcoma (Bone Cancer), and Loss of Bone Mass. Some studies even suggest luxating patellas may be directly linked to early altering.
