Dear Parents/Carers

Feedback from visit from Mrs Therese Laing & Ms Susan Imrie Quality Improvement Officers

Very positive feedback was received from our QIOs in the City Of Edinburgh Council

Areas of strength are highlighted below:

• Warm, welcoming atmosphere as you walk through the door which continues as you walk around the school and nursery

• Enthusiastic, hardworking staff in the school and nursery

• Children and staff who are proud of their school and nursery

• Children treated fairly and equally by all staff and received positive feedback on what they had achieved

• Most pupils were actively involved and engaged in their learning.

• Pupils were well behaved, motivated and engaged

• Displays in the bottom corridor which showed evidence of pupil voice

• Use of Apps to support learning

• Use of planning and tracking approaches in the nursery

• Development of the outdoor space within the nursery

It is always affirming to receive praise on the work that the pupils and staff are involved in. Very well done to all of our team!

Some reminders about up and coming events:

Advent Mass

Our Advent celebration will now take place in St John’s Parish at 10am on Friday 11th December, at the 10am Mass. Primary 6 pupils will prepare the celebration and I would hope that many of our parents would be able to join us. St John’s Netball Team Report

A message from Lynne Crawford…..Thank you for all your hard work with your teams this session. The Winter Round Robin was contested at Firrhill High School between Corstorphine, Dean Park, Juniper Green & St John's Primary Schools. The girls played with great skill and determination, working well together as a team. The final match between Corstorphine and Dean Park was crucial, the winner taking the EPSSA Trophy. Corstorphine edged ahead in the second half winning 10–7. Corstorphine retained the Trophy and were awarded Gold Medals.

Website and Twitter accounts

Please keep checking for information. There is a lot of information which I hope you will find informative and useful. P4 have added photographs from their Thanksgiving Day celebrations and their activities during Road Safety Week.

Winter viruses

Another reminder to parents that in recent years the City of Edinburgh Council has experience many cases of Norovirus within its schools. There are preventative measures which parents can support us with. Thorough hand washing is the simplest and most important infection control measure. If your child is unwell please do not send them to school. Should your child have an attack of vomiting/diarrhoea they should not return to school for 48 hours after the last bout.

In the most extreme cases, schools have had to be closed and major events cancelled. Please help us with hygiene in our school.

Flu Vaccine

Another opportunity to have the flu vaccine for children

New smoke free policy

The Council’s new Smoke Free Policy is now in force. The new policy extends smoking restrictions (currently in place in all

enclosed areas in Council premises, and vehicles used on council business) to surrounding areas. This includes entrance

areas, car parks, playgrounds and courtyards within the boundary of Council premises. Some exemptions to the new policy will

continue to apply in care homes.

Smoking restrictions will also apply to other outdoor areas within the Council’s remit likely to be used by children, such

as play parks. The restrictions may also be applied at outdoor family events organised by the Council. These restrictions

include the use of e-cigarettes (vapourisers), which will be treated the same as cigarettes and other tobacco products.

By law, smoking is not allowed in enclosed areas, or in vehicles used on business.

By extending our restrictions beyond the legal minimum, the Council is responding to the 2013 Scottish Government document

‘Creating a Tobacco-Free Generation – A Tobacco Control Strategy for Scotland’, which calls for Local Authorities to

demonstrate an exemplar role in supporting the public health of local communities in relation to preventable diseases and

ill health caused by smoking.

December Birthdays

Happy Birthday to all who celebrate their birthdays in December.

Thank you for your continued support and co-operation.

Ms. Barbara A Service

Head Teacher
