Paradise Hills United Methodist ChurchThe MessengerDecember Issue 2020Bio – A biography of a member of the church can be included each month. If you have a suggestion, please let us know through our eMail PHUMCNewsletter@ . My name is Barbara Ruth Colvin Price and this is my story. I was born in Hutchinson, Kansas, on October 15, l923. I have two younger sisters. I grew up in Hamilton, Kansas, a dot on the map between Emporia and Eureka. When I was 5 years old, my mother had to go to a tuberculous sanitarium in Norton, Kansas where she spent ten years. I was raised by a housekeeper. When oil was discovered at Russell, my Dad got a job there so we could be closer to my Mom. We could visit her by talking through a window. I graduated from Russell High School a grade A student (Bob Dole and I graduated in the same class). My first job was with MA Bell Telephone Co. as an operator “number please”. I spent a short time in Omaha, Nebraska, with the telephone company also. Since I couldn’t afford college, I went to Topeka, Kansas, to attend a government sponsored school and choose radio as my subject. Also in the class was a cute boy named Johnny Price. About this time the U.S. entered World War II. All the boys in the class went to the recruiting office in mass and joined the Air Force. Johnny and I hadn’t known each other very long, but we corresponded all the time he was gone and through those letters fell in love. When he came home after the war, we were married on May 19, 1946. During the war, I remained at the radio school and went to work at radio station WIBW in Topeka as control room operator. That was a fun job. I was known to the radio audience as ‘Aunt Barbara’. After we were married, we decided Johnny should go to college on the GI bill. We choose Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, Kansas. While he was in school, I worked at radio station KSAL. After 6 years, we had a son, Curtis, and later came Dedria and Timothy. After Johnny graduated, he was offered a job at Sandia Labs in Albuquerque, NM. He later worked for Lovelace Medical Center for 27 years which was a real blessing as he and his family received medical care. I am still considered a Lovelace retiree. After we moved to Albuquerque in 1954, we were faced with what to do with his parents who were retired. We decided to buy an acreage in Corrales and settled there. After several years as a stay at home mom, I was offered a job as secretary at the Corrales Elementary School. I was there 6 years when I had the opportunity to go to work for the YWCA in Albuquerque. I was with the YWCA 15 years then retired. When I think back over my work years, I realized I applied for only one job (the telephone operator), the rest were sent to me by God. Johnny went to heaven in 2007 and I’ve missed him every day since. It seems I have believed in Christ all my life….that He has been with me always. I got a pin when I was in the 3rd grade for perfect attendance in Sunday School for 3 years. I was baptized when I was 9 years old. As I stood before the preacher and he sprinkled me with Holy water, it seemed like the heavens opened and this wonderful light surrounded me. It was a wonderful feeling. As a life-long Methodist, Johnny and I joined Trinity UMC when we came to Albuquerque. When we moved to Corrales, that meant long drives every Sunday and many times during the week for church activities. When we heard a Methodist Church was being built on the West Side, we immediately joined in 1963 and became charter members of Paradise Hills United Methodist Church. We enjoyed many years as active members….youth sponsors, church secretary, treasurer and committee members. We enjoyed Al Jacobsen’s Sunday school class from the Sunday it started until I got to the point where I could not hear the teacher. I no longer attend church in person and miss the people very much. I am the last surviving charter member. I’m not sure if I always listened to His directions. He has taken care of me all my life and I praise Him that I can still live alone and do what I need to do.And nowA WordFrom our PastorDear Church Family,Given the high rates of Covid-19 cases in our state and the governor's order today to shelter in place for the next two weeks, we have made the difficult decision to suspend our in-person worship for the next three Sundays (15th, 22nd, and 29th of November). We will still provide online worship all three Sundays.A final decision to extend to the end of the year is pending. Please watch for future up dates.Second only to the spiritual well-being of our church family is our desire for your physical well-being. Each one of your lives is so precious to us, and we want to do everything we can to keep you safe and protected from the coronavirus. We ask you to stay home as much as possible and to stay safe. Although we will not be gathering in person for worship, please know that we continue to be here for you if you need us.Let us be in prayer for one another and for all those whose lives and loved ones have been touched by this virus.
