November at a glance

Nov. 1: Residence Auxiliary Craft & Bake Sale

Nov. 2: Remember your loved ones Sunday (All Saints)

Nov. 15: Spaghetti Dinner

Nov. 29: Decorate the Church for Christmas

Judging from the number of people (286) who showed up for the 140th anniversary of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, I think it is safe to say that there are a good number of people who still care about St. Olaf. I want to especially thank the Augsburg College choir and Augsburg President, Dr. Paul Pribbenow, for creating an event to rally around.

The anniversary was more than an event, however. It was part of a renewed relationship between St. Olaf and its historic partner. Prior to the anniversary, Dr. Pribbenow visited with Pastor Steve and me and toured the campus. The purpose of his visit was not only to prepare for the anniversary event, but to establish mutually beneficial connections between Augsburg and St. Olaf. In recent years, Augsburg College has changed its emphasis to embrace the cultural diversity of its surrounding neighborhood. Volunteering in the community is now both an instructional strategy and a requirement of a student’s coursework. In 2010 Augsburg College was one of six higher education institutions in the nation to receive the 2010 Presidential Award for Community Service. Following the visit, Pastor Steve and I visited Elaine Eschenbacher, Director of the Sabo Center for Citizenship and Learning at Augsburg and plans are underway to bring Augsburg students to the St. Olaf campus for service learning projects and internships. The St. Olaf Campus is an ideal setting for students because of the plethora of opportunities in the various non-profit and for profit businesses on campus.

Anniversaries are an opportunity to celebrate accomplishments and to take a moment to rest upon one’s laurels. But, anniversaries are also a springboard for renewed commitment. The 140th anniversary reminded me of how we have been blessed these past five years with the succor of a loving God, who we know through Jesus Christ.

The blessings of God are woven into our lives with events that we often do not immediately recognize. During the anniversary celebration, St. Olaf member, Beatrice Mount read from the 12th chapter of 1 Corinthians. This is the chapter where Paul compares the members of a church to the members of our physical bodies. Paul makes the point that all members, no matter how small or insignificant they may seem to be, contribute equally to the whole. Beatrice lost her son in a tragic way last summer and is carrying grief, as many of us are. But, in the body of Christ, that grief does not diminish the body, but builds it up through the redemptive power of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Carry on, Beatrice and carry on, St. Olaf. Your God loves you more than you can ever know. Peace…. Pastor Dale

October Events

Seven men attended the Men’s Fellowship Dinner on October 5, at Holy Nativity Lutheran Church, 3900 Winnetka Ave. N. in New Hope. A presentation on service dogs was given. This was an activity of the Bonfire Coalition, of which St. Olaf is a member.

The Jordan Area Community Council (JACC) held their 50th anniversary celebration on Thursday, October 16, at the North Regional Library, 1315 Lowry Ave. N. JACC was originally housed at St. Olaf and is housed at St. Olaf now.

The church celebrated its 140th Anniversary with a rousing celebration service featuring the Augsburg College and St. Olaf choirs and several musicians under the direction of St. Olaf Music Director, Jerry Bursch. Augsburg College President, Dr. Paul Pribbenow, preached. Over 275 people were in attendance. A “traditional church menu,” including red jello with a dollop of whipped cream, was served afterward by partnership Lord of Life, Maple Grove, volunteers. The meal was catered by the Residence, which celebrated its 50th anniversary on the same day. For that anniversary, Loretta Rose was presented the Christus in Mundo Award for 2014 during the worship service and a tour of the Residence was given after the lunch. It was also the 35th anniversary of New Directions Youth Ministry and New Directions guests had their own table at the dinner and shared stories.
